KENNETH KAMAL SCOTT, lyric tenor with excellent coloratura abilities, is a seasoned performer who has participated in many arenas of America's artistic world, including the dance. He has been a guest artist with the Boston Pops under John Williams, the Virginia Beach Pops, the New Jersey Philharmonic singing Uriel in Haydn’s Creation, and the lead tenor in the Messiah with the Nevada Symphony. Other engagements include Brighella and Tansmeister in Ariadne Auf Naxos, Yale Production, Sportin’ Life in Porgy and Bess with the Virginia Opera, supporting role in Rachel la Cubana, Net Opera Production and the cover tenor for all three tenors in "Three Mo' Tenors" at the Di Capo Opera Theater. His Broadway credits include Hello Dolly, Guys & Dolls, Two Gentlemen of Verona, and most notably, the starring role of the 'Wiz' in the original Broadway company for five straight years and in the recent revival of the same production in Houston, Texas at the Theater Under the Stars. He performed (with rave reviews) the role of the 'Griot' in "Black Nativity" at the Fitzgerald Theatre, Minneapolis.
Mr. Scott’s recital repertoire is focused on German art songs, particularly Strauss and the Schumann Dichter Liebe, Neopolitan art songs, French art songs, and art songs by American composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, including African American art songs and spirituals. In 2001 Mr. Scott portrayed Roland Hayes in the prime of his career in Salt Lake City, Utah concert - "The Legacy of Roland Hayes.” Mr. Scott and pianist, Gerald Brown, performed in recital at Merkin Hall, NY in October of 2004.
In addition to his extensive performing experience, Mr. Scott is an accomplished vocal teacher, devoted to the Art of Bel Canto singing and techniques to develop both the beauty and longevity of the voice. In the late 1980's he established the Kenneth Scott Vocal Theatre Inc., a company of singers comprised of his students and various guest artists, as an entity to support new singers. Many of his students are accomplished performing artists in their own right, working in current Broadway and other musical venues. Mr. Scott, who has vocal studios in both New York City and Boston, was a guest professor in the vocal department at Sarah Lawrence College for two years, on faculty at the Brookline Music School, Brookline, MA, and is presently teaching Jazz Master Classes and private voice lessons at the New School University in Manhattan, NY, and is a faculty member of the Mannes College Opera Department.
