26 Obscure, Naughty and Lovely Songs from the 1910s, 20's and 30's!
Ukulele wunderkind and chanteuse Janet Klein has completed an independent release of her debut CD entitled Come Into My Parlor. Klein's CD features Entertaining Songs, Emotive Ballads, and Hot Chansonettes.
Her historical approach to naughty material from the 20's and 30's blends well with her knowing yet kittenish demeanor. Inspired by vitaphone musical short films from the 20's, poetry and performance art, Klein is a gifted and enchanting entertainer, with a sweet sexiness that has been described as Betty Boop meets Betty Page.
With loads of elegance, charm and poise, Klein wraps us around her little finger and leaves us wolf-whistling for more. Refreshing, unique and funny, Klein sings forgotten gems from the teens, 20's and 30's, such as Banana In Your Fruit Basket, If I Can't Sell It I'll Keep Sitting On It and Nasty Man, plus many more made obscure by the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Lil Armstrong (wife of Louis) and Ruth Etting, just to name a few.
Impossible to listen to without smiling.

Saucy Minx
author: Sotera PerezJanet Klein just proves that you don't have to use naughty words to be naughty - and that ukulele is more than just a novelty instrument.
And we thought our Grandparents were so Innocent!
author: Graceann MaciolekWhat a marvelous entry in Janet Klein's collection of musical offerings - anyone hearing Banana in Your Fruit Basket or Need a Little Sugar in my Bowl would know that the line our grandparents fed us about the old days being an innocent time was a big old lie. The joy that Janet brings to her music is infectious, and I listen to all of her CDs, including this one, over and over.
Come Into My Parlor
author: Robert KnightI bought this CD and a ukulele for my sweetheart. We are thrilled with it. The songs are fun, beautiful and sensitively done and very inspiring for a future ukulele songstress.
Indescribably Delicious
author: Carson Hudson, Historical DiversionsI don't write reviews often, but I love this CD! Janet's voice and uke are indescribably delicious! Her other CDs are great, but this one is my favorite. My wife is jealous because I'm madly in love with Janet Klein!
Diverse and surprising!
author: Mark SavaryWhat a joy to listen to this disc. The wide range of songs, expertly vocalized by Klein with fun and charm, will hook you instantly. I also like the simplicity of the accompaniment, which perfectly complements the material. Although mostly fun, the disc has a haunting element underscoring it that I can't quite define. "Happy/sad," maybe. "Mountain Greenery", "Tonight you Belong To Me", "Wooden Wedding", "Take A Picture of the Moon", and, well, ALL of 'em are great. These old songs were so darned good, and are all but forgotten today. Highly recommended.
true fun
author: SaraWhat a blast!! Pure enjoyment. We'll be getting more of this artist.
A superbly scintillatingly chanteuse
author: Ms MarilinJanet Klein's musical style, her voice, and her subtly effective ukelele playing is like a boomerang, you want it to come back to you again and again....we LOVE this recording! Delicious !
What a beautiful voice!
author: MusilosophyJanet Klein has a beautiful voice: delicate and very pleasent.
Do Come On In...This CD weaves a web of DELIGHT!
author: Naturally CurlieJust try to sit still. The tunes are adorable. Entertaining.
Janet Klein is a Goddess!
author: The Divine Mrs. WaltersJanet Klein and her Parlor Boys is a true find. Janet Klein is an artist in every sense of the word. When listening to her music all one can do is sit back, relax and be transported to another era. Her music is soothing yet quirky and allows you to become intransed. I poped in the CD, made a cup of tea and lit some candles and was in the 1920's then Hawaii....it was magic. This is my first Janet Klein CD and I am anxiously awaiting another. Janet Klein has charmed and bewitched me.
terrific voice and love the change from ordinary
author: mike hartwigI heard this artist on wholewheatradio.org and was anxious to hear more. I was not let down at all. Much credit to Janet and her band!

Naughty indeed! It brought a blush to my cheeks and a smile to my face just thinking of my grandparents sipping gin whilst listening to these numbers... I will certainly watch for more from Janet. Very enjoyable!
I love this CD
author: Karen CartaThis is the coolest, kookiest music ever. I love it!
some of those songs would make your grandma blush
author: Steve HewittFun cd with a twist. Not quite the songs for a sing around the camp fire with the family cause some of the songs would make your grandma blush.
timeless classic recording that rediscovers principles of 'less is more'
author: nick powelltimeless classic recording that rediscovers principles of 'less is more' and raises the profile once more of the ukulele as a wondeful state of mind, as well as a wonderful musical instrument. Janet deserves unreserved acclaim for her vision with this recording and all her music.
Wonderful!
author: Hop-toadWhat wonderful music! Janet's ukulele playing is enchanting, her voice will break your heart. If you don't know her, you're missing out.
Oh, Janet!
author: SquishJanet, you can come into my parlor any time you want, baby! Loved the sparce instrumentation. Compaired to her other three, this one sounds more like a demo of what she can do alone with her uke.

You'll probably like this CD the most or the least of Janet Klein's. That's because it's the only one that features her singing more than the instrumentation. It's the one on which she did the most with her vocals, & she shows greater vocal range here than on her later CDs. The more I listen to it, the better I like it, & some of my very favorite songs by her are here, including If I Can't Sell It I'll Keep Sitting On It, Naughty Lola, Oh You Dog, You're the Cream in My Coffee, & my favorite Janet Klein song, What A Night for Spooning.
Nothing short of phenomenal!
author: Dennis CropExcellent vocals accompanied by talented musicians but besides that, the audio quality was the best I have ever heard. I felt as if I were sitting in with the recording session --- only more so. Buy it, you will love it!
Delightful ditties!!
author: Bob KevessThis is a simply delightful collection of sweetly sung songs from the 20's and 30's, full of witty double entendres. You'll love Janet Klein's pure, innocent-sounding voice, which is ideally suited to the material. I never realized what wonderful songs were written in that era. Just for bringing these bygone tunes to the public's attention this CD would be worthwhile, but you'll love it on its own merit. Bravo!
Perfectly refreshing&Masterful of the Single Entandre'GreatVocals!
author: shirley woodcock-kolbThis Cd has made people at my parties stop and ask about it. The Instrumentation is refreshing and shows great talent and savvy. The recording is clean and well mixed, as well as the instrumentation & arrangements. It is a great and refreshing honor to hear a present day artist's interpretations of these great tunes, and I encourage you to keep promoting these kinds of CD's, if you can find this kind of talent!!!
Obscure gems from a bygone era.
author: ErnestIf you are looking for very early bluesy jazz with sparse but tasteful accompaniment, this is a good selection for you. Ms Klein has unearthed some real gems and her delivery sounds effortless, a testimony to her talent. Some of the tunes are quite naughty but never cross the line to vulgarity, a cleverness that is often lost on today's writers.

unique, melodic, and just what i needed!
author: amythis is my first taste of janet klein's work, and i'll definilty be back checking out some more! her voice is beautiful, and complimented with a ukelale (sp?) the songs are just the uplifting sweet kick i needed! i especially like the songs she decided to cover...their quirky kinda sexy lyrics work especially well with her flawless high voice giving an almost contrasting mood to her music. this is really unique and most of the tracks immediatly put a smile on my face. it's like musical sunshine after a crummy rainy day!
A Must Have!
author: MoniI had the wonderful opportunity to see Ms. Klein and her Parlor Boys at the Getty Museum. She is absolutely fabulous. I purchased all 3 CDs and I enjoy them at work everyday.
Sweetness and charm anyone?
author: Michael NankinThis album is like spring rain. A sunrise in the tropics. A sweet, warm memory of a time you wished you lived. If there is any proof of the decline (de-Klein?) of the American pop song, here it is. Janet Klein brings back a non-cynical, non-ironic time of wit and truly felt emotions. Bravo!
The Berries, The Bee's Knees, The Tops
author: MattWonderful spare recordings that put the songs up front. Aside from perhaps Stephen Merritt, you won't find lyrics this sly and good anywhere in music today. Janet Klein is an excellent vocalist who knows just how to interpret each and every song and make them sound effortless and simple (which, of course, they're not). Add in her fine uke playing and you have a truly stunning record.
COY TOY
author: Dave White Glue MagazineIf you think a ukulele is a Don Ho/Tiny Tim joke, you need to hear Janet Klein play one. She's like the Jimi Hendrix of the uke. Not that she sets hers on fire or anything. That would be unladylike. Instead, she puts it to use resurrecting, in her own words, "obscure ,naughty and lovely" songs from the 1910s to the 1930s, a time when people were having sex but writing songs about it required a secret decoder ring. Her cd "Come Into My Parlor", the perfect accompaniment to spooning (which did not always mean that thing you do in bed) and pitching woo with your baby, is available for your entertainment right now, with a new release scheduled sometime early in the next century. Until then, treat yourself to one of her numerous local appearances with her band The Parlor Boys, whose members include a couple of R. Crumb's Cheap Suit Serenaders, and her valiant ukulele, which destroys stale kitsch the way Woody Guthrie's guitar destroyed fascism.
She is no Betty Boop wannabe.
author: Michael Simmons Acoustic Guitar MagazineJanet Klein avoids the squeaky delivery and the boop-boop-a-doops that plague many women performers who sing songs from the 20s and 30s. Her songs may be saucy, but she is no Betty Boop wannabe. Klein accompanies herself on ukulele, and her material ranges from wistful "If You Want The Rainbow You Must have the Rain" to risque "Banana In Your Fruit Basket". She is accompanied by guitarist John Reynolds, a fine player in the Eddie Lang tradition.
What could possibly be nicer than naughty songs?
author: Richard LewisWhat could possibly be nicer than naughty obscure and lovely songs from the 1910s, 20s and 20s? The answer is nothing. No, I am not going to argue with you. There is nothing nicer than naughty songs.
Janet Klein has done you, the music lover, two very big favors
author: Elizabeth Setler Popgallery 1999Whether you know it or not, singer/ukulele player Janet Klein has done you, the music lover, two very big favors. First, she's unearthed a selection of indescribably wonderful and unjustly forgotten songs from the first part of this century, songs which, for the most part, are not available on any format more modern than the 78 rpm record. Second, both live and on record, she's performed those songs for us in an utterly breathtaking fashion. On this beautifully packaged self-released cd,she treats the listener to 24 such gems; the cover describes them as "Emotive Ballads", "Hot Chansonettes", "Jingling Foxtrots", and "Lyrical Notions". Her knowing, kittenish vocal delivery, the equivalent of a wink and a smile, is perfectly matched with the material (which, chock full of clever wordplay and double entendre, almost makes one long for the days of strict censorship) and the delicate instrumentation lends an authentically old-fashioned sweetness to songs that,in the hands of a less finely attuned interpreter, might well end up as overblown camp. Impossible to listen to without smiling. Oh and be sure to thank her.
