Album Notes

Kate Laurel Smith's smooth, rich voice has reaped comparisons to the likes of Natalie Merchant, Jewel and Sarah McLachlan, but she has a style to call her own. Possessing an honesty and maturity uncharacteristic of a twentysomething artist, the Denver-based singer/songwriter crafts melodic, radio-friendly pop songs that are inspired by and include tinges of bluegrass, americana and folk music. Kate is a naturally gifted performer whose relaxed delivery coupled with exorbitant passion for music and art has moved audiences to tears. Her sets have been described as a “spiritual experience” by various fans.

Kate is currently recording and producing her first full length studio album at Bridge Studios with engineer and co-producer Paul Andrews, formerly of A&M Records. Her upcoming record features a full band production of the fan favorite "Twentysomething,” an engaging song about love, faith and loneliness during a rite of passage in the young songwriter’s life. Kate's introspective lyrics, bold hooks and effortless talent set her apart from the cookie cutter image of female artists today.

Kate's art is a labor of love that emphasizes individuality and is unconcerned with the insincerity of current industry standards. She believes that the world of music business has opened up for the independent artist with the exposure available via the internet. Through word of mouth, she has already accumulated a strong, devoted following. “My biggest influence is the truth,” she says. Clearly, truth is on her side.

Kate has been a finalist in the Tucson Folk Festival Songwriting Competition, a winner and alternate in two categories of the Walnut Valley Festival NewSong Contest in Winfield, KS and a showcase artist selected for the Midpoint Music Festival in Cincinnati, OH. She has shared the stage with Katie Herzig (formerly of Newcomers Home), Bill Mallonee (formerly of Vigilantes of Love) and Nashville Star Finalist Tamika Tyler.

An outstanding full-length debut album, Sometimes is independently produced by Colorado recording artist Kate Laurel Smith. A natural born singer-songwriter, Kate plays piano and guitar throughout the album, accompanied by bass, drums and a hint of harmonica. Kate has a voice like Emmylou Harris, and a story-telling knack like the great Joan Baez. Sometimes has soul, bluegrass, folk and jazz.
