Album Notes

Toby Koenigsberg has performed with jazz musicians and ensemble leaders including Marian McPartland, Rich Perry, Ben Monder, and Bill Holman. He tours regularly with the Toby Koenigsberg Trio, performing at the Rochester International Jazz Festival, Jazz Festival Calgary, the Tony Williams Jazz Festival, and elsewhere.

In addition to performing, Koenigsberg has written numerous compositions and arrangements for large and small jazz ensembles and for studio orchestra. Down Beat Magazine awarded his composition "Song for Aki" -- the opening track on Push -- Best Original Song in its 2003 Student Music Awards.

On Push, Koenigsberg is joined by world-famous saxophonist Rich Perry, of the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, as well as extraordinary young talents: Ike Sturm (bass) and Ted Poor (drums).

Push features five of Koenigsberg's original compositions alongside jazz classics Giant Steps by John Coltrane (performed in alternating meters - 4/4 and 7/4) and Ju Ju by Wayne Shorter. The CD also features one jazz standard, an evocative ballad rendition of Too Marvelous for Words. For this CD, seven nights and over 80 tracks were recorded; Push features the finest 8 tracks of these sessions.
