What a great flutist!
The opening of Angela Koregelos’ CD An American Recital is a stunning performance of Copland’s flute fanfare, put forth with a gorgeous, rich tone which welcomes the listener into what promises to be a thrilling musical experience. From then on the pleasure just grows.

The Virgil Thomson Sonata for Flute Alone is nothing less than a tour de force, with remarkably fluid and masterful playing. Later in the program, Lou Harrison’s haunting “Air in G Minor for flute” with its eerie cello drone, followed by the dark and mysterious “Night Soliloquoy” by Kent Kennan, take the listener on a journey to darker, more introspective places; only to be drawn out into the light again by Angela’s energetic and passionate performance of Muczynski’s “Sonata for Flute and Piano.” Her mastery of this technically challenging piece is truly impressive. The cadenza in the last movement is nothing less than brilliant.

One can’t help noticing that Angela’s rich, full-bodied tone, not forced or overly “flutistic,” as so many flute performances tend to be, creates a pleasing, natural sound that everyone can love -- one which accessible to the layperson, and not just to other flutists. Thanks to this, and to the rock-solid skill and good taste of all musicians involved here, this entire CD is jaw-droppingly wonderful from beginning to end.
