notes
Did you see the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou" and notice that the song "I'll Fly Away" was not the same as on the soundtrack CD? Well, you're right. In the movie you heard the Kossoy Sisters. Now you can hear them on a new CD "Hop On Pretty Girls" (Living Folk).
The Kossoy Sisters, identical twins Irene and Ellen, have been singing traditional songs in their clear bell-like harmonies since the early 1950's. They performed at the first Newport Folk Festival and were part of the music scene in Greenwich Village's Washington Square in New York City. By the age of 20, they had performed widely in New York. Their legendary album "Bowling Green" which includes the song "I'll Fly Away" was recorded by Tradition Records in the mid-50's and has inspired and influenced many singers through the years. The album was re-released as a CD by Rykodisc in 1997.
Irene and Ellen have sung all over the United States at festivals, concerts and coffee houses. Their new CD "Hop On Pretty Girls" largely consists of southern mountain traditional songs, but also has two original songs by the sisters. Accompanying them are Pete Sutherland, Lorraine and Bennett Hammond and others.

Better than ever
author: William EstabrookIn their original album "Bowling Green," Ellen and Irene Kossoy displayed great maturity of presentation and their how famous ehthereal harmonies. With this later effort, they retain their initial power and add even greater degrees of sweetness, charm, depth and honesty. Picking a favorite is like trying to choose among a spread of perfect diamonds, each beautiful it its own way. Get a CD of the WBUR interview (WBUR.com) and hear the sisters chatting with an interviewer and also playing a new version of "I'll Fly Away" plus an unrecorded gem.
A Great Album
author: dan mozerAll songs are good but I am really crazy about Belle Starr and Charles Giteau, both real life figures. I have played them each a 1000 times.
Finally a second album!
author: Antoine BoisvertI only give this album four stars (rather than five) because it falls one small star short of the album of their youth, BOWLING GREEN. But some of the songs are even better than anything on the old album, including the quasi-title track, "Rake and Rambling Boy" (which includes the phrase "hop along girls.") and the classic assassination number, "Charles Giteau." Their eerie harmonies are still dead on, singing about the grimmest matter with delightful relish. I am REALLY glad I bought this record.
The miracle of the Kossoy Sisters
author: Heiko Schroeder (Czech Republic)First there was the heartstopping I'll fly away in the Coen film O Brother, then I heard Bowling Green, which is defineteley a splendid album, indeed. But a real miracle is the release of their second CD Hop on Pretty Girls. 47 years later the great sound of the Kossoys is even more enchanting, the selection of the songs shows a greater variety than Bowling Green. It is not possible to recommend special songs, it is not only the folky flavor of Across the Blue Mountain, every song is a little diamond, the whole CD is a timeless pleasure on the highest level! Hop on Kossoy Sisters, do not let us wait such a long time to hear from you again.
A Gem !
author: Tim GrimmAfter many, many years The Kossoy Sisters have released a "new" recording. It's well worth the wait. I cut my teeth on their "Bowling Green" album and this new one contains many gems... "Across the Blue Mountains", "Pretty Polly", "Sun's Gonna Shine", "Rake and a Ramblin' Boy". Buy this to hear what American traditional music is all about, and for their unique harmonies that predate and directly or indirectly influence the best of the female singers today.
