Concise statements of mood, melody and songwriterly arrangements make Chris Koza's solo debut a beguiling listen. In Exit Pesce, Koza is the man behind the curtain, pulling all the levers-as songwriter, composer, and engineer, he creates an album of stunning clarity and simple voice. Nostalgia seeps from parts unknown among stories of distant coasts, old apartments and urban transplants . The first song, Chicago Ave, builds from a strict drum sample into a salty breeze of warm Pacific ocean air, moving you into earthier voice/guitar work where the clarity of Koza's sentimental lyrics pierce your heart with an ache for times past and places that may have never existed. The title track is a dark, complex affair, whirling us from a Euro-trash inspired chorus into a foot-stompin', wailing bridge. The album culminates with two songs of simple lyrical beauty woven with lush string arrangements, and sung with a passion that exposes Koza as worthy company for the likes of Elliot Smith, Badly Drawn Boy or Paul Simon.
