notes

When the debut album "Jordan's Sister" by unknown artist Kendall Payne hit the stands... people took notice. A 1999 press release read, "She sings and plays with a passion that belies her age and she writes with the insight of a young woman who has lived beyond her years." The album sold close to 100,000 units, and its music was featured in films including "Never Been Kissed" staring Drew Barrymore and "Beautiful" with Minnie Driver, and the single "Supermodels" was selected as the theme song for the WB's hit TV show "Popular." In 2001 Payne was honored with a prestigious Dove Award for Best Alternative Rock Album. After co-authoring the book Mirror, Mirror published by Zondervan and touring with the likes of Lilith Fair, Dido, Third Day, Delerious (and many more), it seemed that everyone was beginning to understand what made this artist so special.

However, due to trying circumstances in the music business and an unexpected regime change at Capitol Records, Payne and the label parted ways in 2002. "Every great songwriter needs fuel for their fire," she says, "and there is no greater fuel than the ache of rejection. I just never bargained for how hot the flame could get." Shortly after leaving Capitol, she also parted ways with her management company and Christian label counterpart. Once the darling of the industry and now alone in the music business, she recounts, "I found myself standing in my living room, ironing something while in my pajamas, wishing the phone would ring. It was quite humbling, I must say. I had made and found my identity in being an artist. If I wasn't that anymore... I didn't know who I was."

And so began a season of soul-searching. Payne remembers, "It was a very dark place for me, but in retrospect I would not trade it for all the success in the world." Days were spent taking classes at community college, working odd jobs around town and getting involved in a local church. "I felt like I was re-discovering my passion for life." And each night she'd return home to her guitar. "It called to me - the music was practically writing itself. It only needed me to transcribe it onto paper." The songs began to pour out, each inspired by real life heartaches and happiness. "People always say 'what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.' I'm a firm believer in that principle; in fact, I'm living proof of it."

Being so moved by her voice and talent, friend and actor Zachary Levi (ABC's "Less Than Perfect") approached Payne with an offer she couldn't refuse, financing her sophomore album. Now that the songs were written and the funding was in place, all they needed was a brilliant producer. After an inspiring late night coffee one Thursday evening with producer Tim Schoenhals, the team was in place, and on Monday morning Payne found herself in the studio starting the first session on her follow-up record "Grown."

Recorded at the Treatment Room in North Hollywood (with additional recording by Justin Schier at Sonik Wire), Payne and Schoenhals worked tirelessly for 5 straight months. Without an established band, each musician was hand picked for the appropriate song with special appearances by Jason Wade (Lifehouse), Ricky and Randy Jackson (The Daylights) and Jamie Wollam (Avion).
Payne explains, "I hate being in the studio. I get so bored; I'm much more of a "Live" kinda girl. However, I must say this group of guys made it not only bearable but enjoyable!"

Anyone who's seen Payne's live show will not quickly forget the high energy she brings to the stage. (Even when it's just her and her guitar.) "Grown" has its fair share of toe-tapping, up-tempo, sing-at-the-top-of-your-lungs kind of hits. Payne is the sole songwriter, with only one co-writing credit. She recounts, "I already had the verses to the song "Backwards" (Track 8) but I was really stuck on where to go from there. So I took it to my friend Jason Wade (Lifehouse) and in 5 minutes he wrote a chorus and bridge. After that, I took it home and wrote all the lyrics in a few hours. It's a rare thing when a song comes that easy"

The title of the Album "Grown," finds its origin in the opening lyric to the song "Twenty Three" (Track 10). A masterpiece Payne began creating on the night of her 23rd birthday. "Twenty-three, when did we become grown?" she sings lamenting the cynicism that typically progresses with age. "There was a time," says Payne "when I wanted to call the album 'Sad & Slow' because it felt like all I was writing was sad and slow songs. I even wrote a song called 'Happy' (Track 6) which is about being sad."

There are also songs that fall in the mid-tempo range for some easy listening, such as "Aslan" (Track 9), a whimsical, childlike melody with a grown up message. Payne says, "After re-reading The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis as an adult, I fell in love with Aslan all over again."

By continuing to write songs, non-fiction and children's books, as well as speaking engagements there appears to be no end to this artist's creative capabilities. With the little free time Payne is left with she enjoys staying closely connected with family and friends, and also stays involved with her church community. There is no doubt, Kendall Payne will continue to "wow" audiences for decades to come, the independent release and success of "Grown" will indeed be an integral step in her journey.

  • Grown is great!

Decided to buy Grown also when my reason for finding this site was Paper Skin. Loved Paper Skin so much it took me awhile to get around to fully listening to this one. Now I'm hooked on Grown as well. Favorite is Rollercoaster. Can't listen without dancing about or rocking along in the car. Lyrics & music - Kendall Payne is a master of both.

Beautiful songs! Saw her when she visited our church in Chandler, AZ. She only sang two songs and I wanted more! So glad I purchased this CD--it was worth every penny!

  • Grown is wonderful!
    author: Karen

Grown by Kendally Payne is just a wondeful, heartfelt CD. The songs are personal, and her pretty voice carries the melodies into a land of peacefulness and tranquility. Scratch is my favorite track and the lyrics are beautiful with a yearning to behold. You'll love this CD if songs of love and true beauty bring happiness to your heart and mind.

  • Full of God's Wisdom!
    author: Danelle

This cd speaks volumes about life and the nature of our heavenly Father. It's got a great mix of rockin' songs and some that just put you in that peaceful mood. I love the last song... you have to know the story behind why she wrote it. Saw her in concert and she explained it. It's such a beautiful song... Way to go Kendall Payne!

I loved the Cd every song told a story and it was by far the best Cd I have ever owned. Plus I recieved it quickly by cdbaby.com

  • Awesome CD!!
    author: Kevin

Grown is a tremendous follow up to Kendall's first CD. She can really write songs in a way that touches the everyday person.

  • My new discovery
    author: sampleman

Not familiar with the artist before hearing Aslan on the radio. Love the entire cd, and the service from CD Baby.

  • Awesome! I'm glad I found her!
    author: Rick F.

Great service from CD Baby and a great CD! What more could I ask for?

  • author: amanda

More than the CD, I loved the service of CD baby! Thanks!

  • a great comeback
    author: Tim Guy

Kendall Payne has been massively over-looked as an artist, which is a shame. This CD has some solid tracks on it, the most outstanding being "Scratch" and "Twenty-Three". The only let-down is the last track "Pray", which is not only a bad song, it's followed by a really awful hidden bonus track. If this album were to finish after track 12 I would have given it 5 stars. But don't let the ending put you off what is otherwise a fantastic CD.

  • Even Better Than Jordan's Sister
    author: Kali'

I caught Kendall Payne live in Austin last October and she sang many of the songs on this album and hooked me like a baby trout! I bought one copy that night, listened to it, loved it and went to CDBaby to get copies for my daughters. Outstanding lyrics, melodies and her sincerity comes through in every line...don't miss that last song, it's a keeper.

  • cannot stop listening to this cd bought 3 copies to share
    author: mary lou birnbaum

each song speaks to me. each one has a message for me and each song has grace and peace flowing through the words. a delight and a pleasure. I should have kept two copies for me so I don't have to take it from the car to the house

  • I loved it powerful lots of emotion....anger...love...joy...

I loved it powerful lots of emotion....anger...love...joy...

  • Better and better...
    author: Manasotakey41

"Grown" is an aptly applied title to a singer/songwriter who has definitely matured in thought, lyrics and musical presentation since her 1999 debut. It is a move from entertainment and energy into wisdom and thoughtfulness.

  • Fantastic follow-up to her debut
    author: Laura M

Wonderful voice with an amazing range, not simply in tone but also in emotion. I loved her first album but with 'Grown' it seems she truly has grown up. The lyrics are beautifully poetic and speak volumes about her life, whilst connecting to the listener. 'Rollercoaster' is my favourite for sheer pop-style exuberance, but the slower numbers are all equally as moving as the other. I received this CD a week ago and have listened to it non-stop since.

  • author: Paul in the UK

Preceded Avril Lavigne but had none of the hype. An outstanding, if belated, follow-up to Jordan's Sister; still packs a punch.

  • Mesmerizing! I'm impressed
    author: Faith

Kendall's voice is simply angelic...with an occasional edge that reminds me of Ani DiFranco :) This CD is easy to listen to from start to finish - not over-produced and each song has it's own unique identity. The lyrics are really thought provoking and beautiful

  • Great cd- just as good as the first one!
    author: Jessica

I've always enjoyed Kendall Payne's music and just rescently found out about her second cd. I looked in a ton of stores only to never find it- until here. I am so glad I found the cd, it's great!

  • Wow!!!
    author: Jeyde

It's a great album, Kendall was good on her first album and now she's more than good. So I'm french and go on writing in french.

  • refreshing
    author: jen

This CD has a lot of great songs. I'm too used to buying a new CD and finding two or three songs that I love. I can listen to this CD straight through. AND it's inspiring, fun to sing along to and uplifting. Gread addition to my collection.

  • Love it!
    author: Megan

I enjoy this album very much. She uses interesting arrangements to bring life to her songs.

  • Cleverly thought provoking
    author: Matt Frost

Long over due, the new Kendall Payne album "Grown," clearly demonstrates her uncanny ability as a song writer to drive home thought provoking lyrics with simple, yet heart tugging melodies. You can't help but really feel what it is shes trying to extend to the listener. Though worth the wait, fans are hoping her 3rd release finds us sooner than this latest effort. Her voice, melodies and song craftsmanship is so addicting it leaves you wanting more... NOW!

  • Good follow-up to an amazing debut
    author: James

While I do like Kendall's latest, it didn't make me stop in my tracks the way her first album did. That being said... if you ever have the chance to see her live, do it. She's an amazing artist and I can't wait to see what's coming next!

  • real
    author: Aaron Corbett

ms payne writes real lyrics. this cd is better than her first because she has grown over the last four years. i really connect with her music because i'm the same age and like her the last four years have been a battle but also like her im coming to realize that God has always had me where He wants me. Grown reflects this perfectly.

  • oh yes, it's great!
    author: Malerie

This CD continues on with what the first began, but not the same either, so it filled my expectations from the first, but is different so that it's not a replica. Oh yes, folks, it's a good one.

  • Kendall has definitely 'Grown' from her first project!
    author: Mimsy

Payne's sophmore release is everything I hoped and expected it might be. The two things I love most about her music are it's brutally raw lyrics and refreshingly unique musical style and sound. It is apparent in her lyrics that though life has not been easy, it has been blessed (Reference the song "Ups & Downs"). I could no sooner pick a favorite star in the heavens, but "Scratch" and "The Moon" are at the top of my favorites on this album. Fantastic compilation! I only wish these were sold mainstream so all could benefit from refreshing originality in the midst of a droning industry.

  • Worth the waiting for....
    author: Mark Levigne

Once again Kendall Payne shares from her soul her true feelings, struggles and disapointments, and the joys of patience and time. Well worth the wait is the gap between "Jordan's Sister" and "Grown" but... let's not let it go that long till we get together again, okay? ;-)

  • Kendall Payne's "Grown" is a MUST HAVE
    author: Eddie Sechrest

Prepare to take a journey into yourself. See the spirit of good and of bad coexisting together deep inside of your conscience. And after all the lyrics are sung and the music has played you will realize that God cares about your struggles and that He loves you. Kendall Payne’s GROWN moves you into a higher level of existence.

  • growing up with grown
    author: holly

i have listened to nothing but grown since i received it last week. tho i am a few years past 23, i feel that kendall has been reading my journal...and i think we redheads need to hold a forum... i am especially fond of the slower tracks on the album, they are very moving and they minister to the soul. god bless.

  • Worth the wait..... AND you get 2 more songs than you were promised!
    author: Jason

This is an AMAZING CD. GROWN is full of great songs that are beautifully done. It was a big surprise to have 2 more songs than the CD baby site had listed! Rollercoaster is super catchy and I couldn't keep from singing along. The songwriting and musicianship is top notch and seems like a great progression from Jordan's Sister. From start to finish, this is an great album!

  • Outstanding CD but no match for Kendall's first CD "Jordan's Sister".
author: Henrik Riis - DENMARK (overseas)

Like so man others I have eagerly been waiting for years and years for Kendall to come out with a new CD. Finally it's here. The music is still very much Kendall Payne and I am very pleased with GROWN, yet it doesn't quite measure up to Jordan's Sister. Every single song on Jordan's Sister is a true masterpiece and every single track stands tall on it's own. The songs on GROWN are less melodic and more difficult to seperate. But THANK YOU Kendall, Jordan's Sister is the most played CD in my extensive collection and I hope you will keep putting out new CD's on a regular basis :)

  • Real Deep Music
    author: Garrett

This CD is full of music that is both very real and personal, a rarity in our day. A great deal of emotions come to life in her album. Kendall Payne is one of the most talented artists I have ever heard. I am fully satisfied with her music and reccomend this CD to everyone, Lord knows I did the last one.

  • I was starving...
    author: rubyshoes75

...for a album chocked full of rich and captivating tunes, and Grown did not disappoint. I fell upon this artist through a blind recommendation, and was thrown for an immediate loop. Kendall's sincere lyrics blend harmonically with the melodies so obviously meant for them, then become further balanced out by her resonating voice; Scratch happens to be a perfect example - one of many when it comes to Grown. Many thanks for an album I can't stop listening to!

  • AWESOME CD! I was so excited to get it!
    author: Anna T*

Kendall Payne did an amazing job on this CD. I couldn't wait to get it, and it definitely lived up to my expectations. I listen to it everywhere-in the car, my room, at the gym. It is a good mix of relaxing music and fun, inspiring songs. All are well-written and well-performed!

  • heartataciousness in a 10 out of 10 kinda deal.
    author: erinne

this cd has made me very happy because i needed something to accompany jordan's sister in the GREAT MUSIC sleeve of my CD holder. i'm so happy kendall's back :)

  • A well-done follow-up to "Jordan's Sister"
    author: Joanne

It was a long wait, but Kendall finally released her follow-up CD to Jordan's Sister, and I love it. Especially the hidden track at the end. Can't wait to hear what's next from her.

  • Worth the wait!
    author: Kristen L

The wait is over! The many years that I have wondered when Kendall Payne was going to release another cd have finally paid off. It was well worth the wait, and I will add Grown to the top of my favorite cds list.

  • quirky, again
    author: huskerivey

Kendall keeps up with her unique style that i absolutely love! It's great to have something that is fresh and different from the monotony that I hear everyday! Keep up the great work!

  • Wonderful cd!
    author: Laura

This cd is so great... very good to listen to while hanging out. I like that not all the songs have the exact same sound. The variety is good and the words are moving.

  • amazing voice
    author: Chrissy

I love this cd...and can't stop listening to it. "Scratch" is a song that I can't ever seem to get out of my head. The music that is played in the beginning is so beautiful.

  • A great next step
    author: Allison

Grown definitely picks up where Jordan's Sister left off and I really like it. It took a couple of listens to grow on me just like the first CD did but the more I listen to it the more I like it. I'm sure it will become one of the CDs I listen to for years just like the first because it has the quality of giving you something new every time you listen to it. A CD like that is a rare find. Kendall has definitely "Grown" very nicely!

  • Good follow up to a great first album.
    author: Tacoma Tom

I consider the first album to be one of my favorites over the last few years. I have been anxiously awaiting this album. Overall, I think it is a good album. However, I think it lacks the energy of the first. I think Kendall's song writing is much more mature and I continue to love her voice. With that said, there’s not much that distinguishes this album from a lot of other performers with a similar sound. I recommend this album for established Kendall Payne fans, but if I wanted to introduce others to her talents, I’d push them to Jordan’s Sister. I look forward to more of her work and seeing her in concert again. If only the energy of her live performances could be transferred to CD.

  • Phenomenal!!
    author: Lisa

Great, great music as before! Cello is my favorite string, and I was surprised and excited to hear it on this album! Vocals are beautiful, and the lyrics are spectacular and true. BUY THIS ALBUM!!

  • WORTH WAITING
    author: David Perkins

My well-worn copy of Jordan's Sister is delighted to finally have a mate. Although I'm partial to Little Things, all of Grown is an absolute delight. Buy two, your friend deserves one also.

  • Wise beyond her years.
    author: John Loengard

Kendall Payne was a young artist signed to Capitol Records but was never your typical pop teen princess. She always had really insightful and gutsy lyrics that showed real female strength with dignity. Not the Britney, Christina dress-like-a-hooker type strength. Then her label stupidly let her go!! This is her independently released sophomore and it is awesome. The songs are great and the production quality is first rate. But again it's the words. She is older and wiser and I'm just blown away by this. What a writer. What a talent. Please, if you care about supporting independent talent you have to support Kendall Payne. Well done Kendall. Hang in there kid.....

  • Great!
    author: Liz G

I first heard Kendall Payne when she was visting at my church. She performed Ups & Downs from this album and it struck home with its emotional truth. I bought this album to hear more and the whole album is great -- very honest as well as great music.

  • Thought provoking lyrics that must come from real life experience
    author: Nathan

What I like about this CD: Nice style of music with a good variation of upbeat and slower-thought provoking songs. Lyrics are just wonderful; you can tell the words come from real life experience and they just seem to ring true to life. I don't buy many CD's but this one was a must.

  • Kendall goes even deeper than she did in Jordan's Sister. A perfect title.
    author: John Bergeron

5 years ago, at 19, Kendall displayed the writing and performing skills of someone much older. With this long-awaited second release, she reveals her art to us with even more depth and beauty. These songs speak to the heart and head of the listener. Right from Scratch, they deserve concentrated listening. Great!

  • An awesome CD - worth your money
    author: Danielle

My favorite song is Scratch - it is haunting and the lyrics struck me personally. Kendall's second album showcases her writing skills and maturation since Jordan's Sister. Superb service from CD Baby - the CD arrived very quickly. Thanks!!

i have just a thing to say: GREAT. I love her voice!!!

I loved her first CD so much that I bought this CD without even hearing one song and I wasn't disappointed. I have and will continue to recommend Kendall Payne to almost anyone.

  • Kendall Payne...wow!
    author: Dani

Kendall has such an incredibly solid and beautiful voice. I can't stop listening to the album. It's become an addiction. It's very nice to see that such a wonderful person has an equally wonderful voice.

  • very good!
    author: isabella

most people wouldn't recognize good music if it hit them over the head...or why else is it that people like kendall payne are barely known? what is wrong with the world? they're missing one hell of a record....

  • this whole cd is awsome !! I cant stop listening to it!!!!

kendall paynes new cd is the best!!! Her talent shines strait through this album!!! its nice to listen to an artist who reminds us who were supposed to be living for!!!

  • author: john k

This cd has depth and Kendall's voice is very appealing. Some of the lyrics bring to mind Brennan Manning's books. This cd is great to put on after work while laying down on the couch to relax. Highly recommended!

  • Wonderful CD

I have not stopped listening to this CD since I bought it! It's great to see that there's a new CD out by such a great, and underrated, artist.

Worth the wait. Kendall does not disappoint. Each song is a beautiful story.

  • *thumbs up*
    author: Dominika

It was definitely worth to wait so long for her second record, I love it!

  • must buy!
    author: Lana

I love this album it hasn't left my cd player since I brought it, her songwriting abilities amaze me. The best song to me is 'twenty-three', it shows she has so much potential and deserves to be signed! It's a must buy to hear some raw talent.

  • Well worth repeat listenings
    author: Tony!

Kendall's long-awaited second CD is fantastic. 'Aslan,' in particular, is one of the best songs about understanding God that may have ever been recorded, and well reflects C.S. Lewis' assertion that 'He's not a tame lion.' Some of her more poetic songs remind me of Rich Mullins' ability to put the supernatural into real world terms. Kendall's voice rings with an authenticity lacking in many mainstream artists. In short, 'Grown' was everything I hoped it would be, and more.

  • Another AMAZING album from Kendall Payne!
    author: Joy

Jordan's Sister has been in constant rotation in our house for the last couple years, and I anxiously awaited more from Kendall Payne. I am thrilled with the new album. In "Ups & Downs" she sings, "It's coming to peace with the darkness in me that allows the true light inside to shine." That sums up the album for me. It's a darker, grittier album, in both content and sound, but it's a darkness born of maturity, and it's not depressing. I LOVE it - especially "Aslan" which will join "Supermodels" on my playlist for all time.

  • I loved it, I hope I don't have to wait 5 years for another CD
    author: David Johnston

I think Grown was great. I espically enjoyed Ups and Downs and Aslan. I think her music is honest and organic, something that is missing in a lot of modern music. Thanks

  • "Grown" is heads and shoulders above "Jordan's Sister"
    author: J. Alan Curtis

This album is not perfect, thus the four star rating. However, it is still wonderful, and without question better than her original release, "Jordan's Sister". Right from the start of the epic "Scratch", her increased maturity is evident. The album is seemingly flawless, with the song "Twenty Three" being one of the best of all time. The only downer here is the lack of another "Closer To Myself" type track, which was the fun and rockin' highlight on her first release. Her attempt at matching the power of that song comes with the upbeat "Superstar", but if falls way short. We can overlook that though, because asking Ms. Payne to produce an equal song would be like asking Jars of Clay to re-create "Flood". Overall, this is brilliant artistry. This amazing singer/songwriter deserves to be signed once again and displayed successfully to the world. "Grown" is a phenomenal record with a perfect mix of touching ballads and upbeat pop/rock songs, and it is without question the best album I've heard on the independent music scene.

  • I'm speechless
    author: Skippi

My friend told me about Kendall Payne. I heard only one of her songs and knew I gotta buy this CD. So I did, which wasn't that easy, cause I'm from Germany and for some reason we can't buy it here. But fortunately "CD Baby" ships to Europe =) Anyway, the CD is f&%#ing awesome. Usually I never give 5 stars, cause I'm actually...I would say...hard to impress. But 5 stars for Kendall Payne and her CD !!!

  • LOVED IT! Kendall, I MISSED you!
    author: Ben Jones

I have looked for more from Kendall ever since "Modern Day Moses" moved me to tears... This CD is a Godsend. The songs are more personal and more overtly faithful, without preachiness or the judgmentalism that many other Christian artists exude. Kendall is human, broken and seeking Grace as much as anyone. Her songs really speak to me and I hope she never stops performing and recording. Thank You Kendall!

  • A new favorite of mine... like no other artist I've heard!!
    author: Tiffany

Kendall is an amazing songwriter and has a powerful voice like none other. Her creative songs and unique style never get old. This CD has such a wonderful variation too for every mood I'm in!!

  • It's about time!
    author: Eric

I've been waiting for this cd ever since I saw Kendall live on THE GIRLS ROOM tour years and years ago. I was beginning to think she had dropped off the face of the Earth and we would sadly not hear from her again. not the case! "Grown" is a perfectly apt title for her second cd. Kendall keeps the same sense of melody and biting lyrics that she had with her debut but there's something about GROWN that is stronger and more put-together. The songs all work amazingly well together whether she's rocking out or singing a heart-breaking ballad. This cd is definitely an extension of the first cd, not much of a difference musically but the maturity is there and it just shows that Kendall is back in full force. Can't wait to hear more!

  • it was very good
    author: AL

it was a very good cd,i would highly recomend it.and the service of this store is unbelievable

  • DESTINED TO BECOME A TOP-TEN OF ALL TIME!!!
    author: Tyler Krohn

Once you pop "Grown" into your CD player it may never leave it! I speak from personal experience. No matter what stage of life you find yourself in you are destined to be touched, challenged, altered, and moved by this masterful album. You will cry, you will laugh, you will catch yourself bobbing your head, tapping your toes, and singing along as loud as you can. Buy "Grown" and I promise you will forever be changed... satisfaction guaranteed!

  • author: Hollie Henderson

Phenomenal songwriting abilities. It's no wonder she is such a hit with T.V. and Movies. Each song paints a story. This albums use of imagery is a clever way to help you see what Kendall is actually feeling. Rah! Rah! for the Sophomore Album!
