Getting her start at the young age of 17, Kendall Payne was signed to Capitol Records (EMI) and released her first album “Jordan’s Sister” in 1999, which was later picked up and distributed by Sparrow Records (EMI). Over the next several years Payne worked tirelessly touring with The Lilith Fair, Dido, Third Day, Delirious, and many others, and seeing the use of her music in movies such as "Never Been Kissed" and TV shows such as "Popular" and "Felicity". With an extensive touring history under her belt, a Dove Award for "Best Alternative Album of the Year", and over 100,000 units sold the future was looking bright.

That is until a regime change at Capitol Records left Payne without label support, which is the "down and dirty" way of saying… she got dropped.

Entering a dark and trying season of disillusionment Payne still managed to channel her emotion into song. With the financial backing of her friend Zachary Levi Payne’s second project “Grown” was released independently in 2004. The release garnered tremendous critical accolades and unusually impressive sales, success and exposure that boomed after Payne’s song “Scratch” was featured in an episode of the hit TV show “Grey’s Anatomy”.

Regardless of these successes it remained unclear what Payne’s future would hold. Without any interest from major record labels she wondered if she’d ever get the chance to make another album. However, with the encouragement of family and friends Payne began to embrace her identity as an independent artist and began to revel in its potential. She recounts, “I once had a great philosophy teacher who told me, ‘If an eagle only has one strong wing it won’t be able to fly very high. It will need to strengthen its weaker wing in order to reach new heights.’ Now I appreciate the uphill road I’ve had to climb because it’s made me develop the sides of my personality that weren’t so strong. I am a better person because of it; how could I be anything but grateful?”

After receiving a piano as a gift from her husband in early April of 2006, Payne decided to set aside her acoustic guitar and tickle the ivories for a season. “It’s kinda funny,” Payne recalls, “I decided to learn piano because I wanted to have a Christmas party. Sounds strange, but it’s true. I love singing carols and they sound much better on piano. So everyday from April to December I would practice ‘Joy to the World’, ‘Silent Night’, and a host of other classics. My neighbors weren’t too happy come mid-July, but my party guests were very impressed come December!”

Having played guitar all her life Payne began to feel that her songwriting had grown predictable. However, the novelty of a new instrument awoke her creativity. “I let my heart, not my head, find the melody.” Before too long the demos for “Paper Skin” were compiled and with a newly inspired confidence Payne headed into the studio with producer Tim Schoenhals.

The album took approximately three weeks to record, mix, and master, with most of the vocals and performances being recorded in just one take. “My last two albums took the better part of a year to make. I simply refused to do that this time,” states Payne.

The title of the album “Paper Skin” does not mislead, for it is by far her most honest work to date, replete with universal, life-inspired themes of love, loss, failure, spirituality, and the unrelenting hope of the human spirit. What makes Payne's music so special and so well-received and respected is her uncanny ability to weave life's most commonly shared experiences into some of the most brilliant lyrics and most moving melodies. Her music is nothing less than amazing and nothing but apropos, it is the soundtrack for life!

    I cannot live without this album...it has been in my cd rotation for weeks now. The songs get under your skin & become a part of you. My absolute favorite is "I Will Show You Love"...such a beautifully written song. I am eagerly awaiting more music from Kendall Payne...I hope she's around for a long time to come!!!

    Kendall, you are the greatest! You are so wise for your years, hon. ( I have a daughter your age.) The talent you display in your albums amazes me. I recently got Paper Skin. (I have them all now.) Congrats on the fast piano learning! I'm so impressed! I still favor your original music, altho I love anything you do! What is next for you Kendall? How about a spiritual album with your perspective on living the Christian life? etc. Songs for encouragement and hope that are uplifting for those times when we get down and discouraged in this world of struggles.     I am more than happy that I came across Kendall on iTunes. It is very, very difficult in Switzerland to get music of and/or hear about independent artists, so I am glad that I stumble across songwriters such as Kendall every once in a while. Her songs are deep, sometimes sad, serious, amazing and absolutely beautiful!!!

    I was pleasantly surprised when I came across "Paper Skin". I had previously purchase "Grown" and was really looking for some new music. On a whim I had typed Kendall Payne into CDBaby's search engine and found this wonderful gem of a new CD. I've been a KP fan since Jordan's Sister came out nearly ten years ago, and have seen her develop in her style, becoming more comfortable with who she is, and always being honest in her music. Her songs are beautiful, heart-breaking, convicting, inspiring, and just the push we need when we need it. Keep it up! Can't wait to hear more!

    Smart, insightful lyrics with some catchy, yet not bubble-gum, melodies. Well-placed Bible quotes in songs that display intelligence and emotional maturity. I felt that I could personally relate to some of these songs in a way that I don't usually with most music. Very enjoyable, HIGHLY recommended.

    This entire CD in incredible - there's not one track that I'll skip over. I own a store, and when I put Christmas music in the CD changer, I missed Paper Skin so much I had to pop it back into the shuffle. I love it when a customer looks up and says "WHO is this?" I work with brides, and have played "Daddy" for several of them. What an awesome song to play at a reception. Kendall Payne is a very talented woman - I'm glad I found her!

    I saw Kendall Payne open for Delirious at the Greek in L.A. back in high school and thought she was great... and now - WOW! The music is great and the lyrics are real. The subject matter is diverse so I'm sure I'll be coming back to this CD again and again for encouragement as I continue on and life brings what it may. Right now I'm loving the first two tracks - they are exactly what I need to hear and ponder. Thank you for your hard work on this album!

    i love kendall's ability to write music that speaks to the soul. with any new c.d., it took a few takes to get into the music because of the unfamiliarity; but after repetitive hearing, it didn't take long to fall in love with songs such as "lines", "belonging", and "touch". though it is quite different than her previous 2 albums, she is on the brink of re-defining christian music. and i'm rooting for her "edginess"

    I loved Kendall's work on Grown and was eager to hear this new recording. I have to say that I wept openly as I listened to the lyrics of nearly all of the tracks as they so perfectly captured several life experiences I have endured or shared with others. This is Kendall's best work BY FAR!!!

    Paper Skin is another incredible CD from Kendall Payne. As always her songs are beautifully written and performed, but this CD seems even more heartfelt. When she sings I REALLY believe what she expresses. You can pop in this (and her other cd's) and listen to it from start to finish. Every song is great. My favorites from this album are: lines, Touch (which is heartbreaking), Burning Embers and Paper Skin. I hope this CD brings Kendall the mainstream success her music deserves. Thanks for another great CD.
