The new album LIGHTHOUSE of Viennese pianist, keyboarder and composer Gerald Krampl can be seen as the consequent continuation of the style that he had already been beginning to develop in his last work Innocent Wasteland (CD 2009).
The nearly chamber music like structured pieces have this time no overall conceptual thematic behind them, they rather are a collection of very personal solitaire impressions which were experienced throughout the one last year. So f.e. the title track Lighthouse was written under the impression of visiting ruins of dilapidated military harbor fortifications in Croatia, Walking The Last Mile came after watching Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood”, Nightpearls – written in one mystical night full of shooting stars,The Guiding Light after lighting up a candle at the graveyard.
Besides the classical approach to write music for Piano + max. 2 strings, this relatively minimalistic and very elemental sound is again expanded with various electronic and nature sound effects to create very intense musical images and moods. And of course you’ll find some reminiscences to Gerald’s yearlong experiences with spiritual and meditative music with his Agnus Dei project for “Music & Poetry”, as well as to his former ProgRock times with his well known bands Kyrie Eleison and Indigo.
How you might classify this music in the end is in fact of nearly no concern, because Gerald’s musical approach is since quite a time far away from any commercial or genre typical clichés, and has proven that it though can find appreciation in classic music magazines, as well as in ProgRock and New Age/Ambient journals and radios (Innocent Wasteland f.e. reached again a top 40 position in the US New Age radio charts!)
