notes

Krispen Hartung's 25-year musical background is an experimental and continuously evolving road trip marked by many excursions and detours - from classical guitar, progressive rock, and world-beat, to fusion, traditional jazz, and avant-garde. In 1993, Hartung began studying the method of real-time looping, the technique of digitally recording live performance, playing it back in real-time, and repeating this process indefinitely to produce multiple layers of interweaving and complimentary guitar parts. Since then, he has become one of the North West's most accomplished real-time looping artists and Idaho's leading member of the international looping community Looper's Delight. Hartung's debut solo CD "Places" was released for sale world-wide in April of 2004 and consists of a series of colorful, innovative, and thought/mood provoking looping compositions that he improvised and recorded on the spot in one take.

As a result of his diverse background and studies, Hartung now exhibits a dynamic and atypical performance style that integrates multiple genres and gives new meaning to the world of improvisational guitar. His most recent CD release is a free improvisational work entitled "Live at the Kulture Klatsch," featuring didjeridu artist and percussionist Vincent Miresse. Krispen is currently working on the release of two new CDs in the December, 2005 timeframe: a new solo CD entitled "Descent to Self," which will be a collection of improvised and computer-based compositions, and a collaboration CD entitled "Krispen Hartung & Friends: Xperimentus," comprised of duo compositions of he and 12 other looping artists from around the world. Krispen performs frequently at venues that foster artistic expression and diverse human discourse, such as coffee shops, art and music festivals, art galleries, and art exhibits.

  • This is truly original art

Krispen Hartung’s new release, Places, caught my ear from the very beginning. The opening track, Continuum brilliantly sets the mood for the rest of the cd. Hartung’s clever use of pulses, looped motifs, swelling harmonies and first-rate improvisation combine to form these unique, all-guitar compositions. The resulting music transcends the monotony of unchanging tempo and tonality, allowing the artist to express himself as if his guitar were speaking its own language – indeed, it spoke to me. On all eleven tracks, Hartung stretches the boundaries of the acoustic/electric guitar, creating inventive collages of non-traditional sounds, oblique melodies and delightful dissonance. You will find it relaxing, intoxicating and thought provoking all at once. If I must make comparisons, the guitar work is at times reminiscent of John McLaughlin while tracks 5 (Fremmed Sinn) and 6 (Min.7 Sec. Evolution), embrace other-world sounds ala the Kronos Quartet; pick abrasions (like a scratchy violin bow) and the pizzicato effect (simulated by plucking strings above the nut) provide some of the string-like qualities. Even so, this is truly original art. Places is a cd that musicians and non-musicians alike will thoroughly enjoy.
