Album Notes

This band takes its listeners from a whisper to a full-throated roar within the turn of a phrase. And with musicians whose influences draw from genres as far-reaching as classical, avant-garde, free jazz, and reggae, they never fail to deliver an unexpected rendition of eclectic music.

Kriste Peoples is a multitalented jazz vocalist and songwriter whose band performs throughout the metropolitan New York area. Whether playing time-honored standards, blues, or original material, Kriste and her jazz trio draw the audience inside the music and don't let go until the last note has been played. Defying categorization, this vocalist's style embodies a wide-ranging interest in music across many musical genres, which include jazz, blues, gospel, funk, and folk.

Peter Capelle has been performing with Kriste Peoples since 2001. As a freelance pianist and composer, he has performed in New York City at The Knitting Factory, Galapagos, Steinway Hall, The Next Stage, The Brooklyn Conservatory, The Theodore Roosevelt Museum and The Duplex. Collaborations include composing the music for "Williamsburg Bridge", a film by Nicole Koschman. In 1998, he was the recipient of an orchestral reading of his composition "Bloodstone" through The American Composers Forum. He holds a degree in Music from Indiana University and The Cleveland Institute of Music.

With an extensive touring background in Europe and Asia to his credit, Masa Kamaguchi has also performed extensively in the United States on both the East and West coasts. Masa has played bass for over fifteen years with groups ranging from traditional big bands to smaller, free-jazz experimental projects. He relocated from his native Japan to continue his studies at Berkley School of Music. Well-versed in straight-ahead jazz as well as avant garde styles of this genre, he is widely featured on recordings with musicians from around the world and brings a fresh interpretation and spontaneity to his craft.

Richard Livingston Huntley is a New York City-based percussionist. He plays many different types of music including jazz, funk, brazilian, klezmer, cuban, etc. He has recorded and or played with many great musicians such as Mulgrew Miller, Billy Drewes, Cameron Brown and many others. He has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Canada. He has also composed music for theatre and film. Huntley is an endorser and clinician for Bosphorus cymbals and Regal Tip sticks and brushes.

What a great voice . . .

What a great voice resembling a bit that of Bjork who can also be a great jazz vocalist. Kriste Peoples certainly deserves more attention, her voice is deep and charming, the compositions are not the usual standards and she has great musicians playing with her. Her album is definitely to be recommended even if you do not fancy female vocalists.

...one of most seductive voices  on the jazz scene today.

I'm happy to inform you that your CD has been very well received by the listeners. By phone, as usual, they selected their favorite tracks: "I'm in love" (Your intrerpretation is magistral. Nina Simone, the Diva, in "the sky", listening your interpretation will be overjoyed. You love Nina, of course!), "Better than anything", "Trouble man', "Summertime" and "Moses". Well, what can I say about you except that you are one of most seductive voices  on the jazz scene today? What a joy to hear your lovely voice!  You have an innate sense of phrasing combined with an overwhelming swing. In short: a truly gifted singer! Your album is highly recommended. Your musicians? Accomplished sidemen ( Mr. Kamaguchi, for example, is a superb bassist. His solo in "Deeper" is overwhelming!!! ).

Kriste is the real deal! Her voice captivates and draws you in .

There is nothing like the way she connects with an audience in person, but this collection of songs is a great representation of the different directions she can go. I love the timelessness of Kriste's style and vocal quality, but I also like the fact that she writes her own stuff on this CD. She has been able create a following in the talent-rich Manhattan jazz club scene and this CD will let others know what they have been missing! I believe she can more than hold her own against any of the more widely know jazz vocalists out there today.
