Up18North - Choices - The Suite - Travel the Gravel
author: Tim J. Fowler
I purchased these four CDs after seeing TKB on "Song of the Mountains" on PBS. It's easy to see where the Kruger Brothers get their influences. Jens takes some of the ingredients of Bela-Alison and others, then cooks up some of the most delicious banjo playing I've ever heard. From the jaw dropping intro of "Alabama Bound" to the relaxing atmosphere of Up18North, he never dissapoints. Uwe Kruger does a fine job on guitar. His vocals have a Doc Watson-John Hartford quality to them, with a little Gordon Lightfoot thrown in. Joel Landsberg's bass playing is always interesting, tasteful and fits what's being played in front of him perfectly. One of my favorite songs from the TV performance (Pacific Morning) was from a CD that is apparently no longer available. That's a shame, and hopefully something the brothers can solve by re-releasing or re-recording their older catalog. I can't recommend these four CDs enough.

I heard the Kruger Brothers for 15 minutes on the Woodsongs Old Time Radio Show and purchased this album (as well as Choices, Carolina Scrapbook, and Carolina Scrapbook Vol. 2) as fast as my dial up connection allowed. A LOT of music with three instruments! It's rare to hear such technically proficient playing and straight-forward lyrics full of living in song after song. Will be buying more once the credit card cools off!
