Album Notes

One of the privileges that we enjoy as a band is to be able to invite musi-cians with very diverse styles and backgrounds to play music with us. We decided to ask some of these musical friends, both old and new, to join us in the Double Time Recording studio to realize Volume Two of our Carolina Scrapbook series. We had planned to work on the project for just a few months whenever our road schedule would allow. A year later we found that we had recorded over 80 tracks with more than 40 guest artists. This CD set contains our favorite selections from these sessions, and we’re thrilled to be able to introduce our friends to you.

Uwe, Jens & Joel
Wilkesboro, NC - September 2005

FEATURED
ARTISTS

R.G. Absher
We gave R.G. the title of “The Bard of Wilkes“. His incredible enthusiasm for the music is contagious, and he has always been a big part in the development of the acoustic music scene in Wilkes County.

Laura Boosinger
An internationally acclaimed Folk musician from Western North Carolina, Laura has become a good friend of ours since we first met several years ago at the Old Time Fiddler‘s Convention in Union Grove N.C. She is also known as “The Carolina Songbird“.

Ronald Dunbar
A talented young singer/songwriter from Wilkesboro who we had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know through our association with the Wilkes Acoustic Folk Society. He performs regularly at local functions.
The Elkville String Band
Consisting of Wilkes County music legends Herb Key, Drake Walsh, Bill
Williams and Jerry Lankford. Together they continue the tradition of Western North Carolina string band music pioneered by Drake’s father “Doc“ Walsh.

Billy Gee
Billy has been a good friend of ours for years. He is not only a fine bass player, but also is a first class stringed instrument repair and service tech-nician. Billy has spent the past couple of years performing with legendary Charlie Waller’s Country Gentlemen.

The Grandson
The Grandsons are: Donald Morron, Daniel Prevette, Greg Crater and Joe Prevette. A fabulous acappella Gospel group that we met during a funeral service for a close friend of ours that was held at the church next door to the recording studio.

David and Douglas Grieser
Two brothers from Minnesota that we met at Minton’s Pawn during festival season. Their very original style was something we just had to record.

Wayne Henderson
Luthier, Guitarist, and Storyteller extraordinaire from Rugby Virginia, Wayne has been a friend of ours since we’ve been coming to America. A
recipient of numerous national and in-ternational awards, we’re especially honored to be able to feature him once again on this Carolina Scrapbook.

Maynard Holbrook
Since his retirement in the Spring of 2004, Maynard has been able to spend a lot more time with us traveling and performing throughout the country. His remarkable talent for vocal harmo-nizing is always a welcome asset to any performance. We’re thrilled that he’s able to contribute so much of
his time and enthusiasm to everything that we do.

Clint Howard
We’re very proud to once again have the opportunity to include Clint’s incredible talents on our Scrapbook. An important part of American Folk Music history, he continues to entertain audiences with his wit and
the charm of a true Southern Mountain gentleman.

Myles and Pal Ireland
Proprietors of the famous Cook Shack in Union Grove N.C., Myles and Pal have been singing together since they were children. The warm blend of their voices is a reflection of their love for the music and each other.

Si Kahn
It was only natural for us to invite
our dear friend Si back to share his in-
sight, wit and remarkable sense of humor once more. Enjoy a new batch of tales, songs and stories from one
of America’s foremost Folk artists.

Moondi Klein
Our collaboration with Moondi has led to some of the most touching recorded performances that we’ve ever made.

Pattie and Jack LeSueur
Mike Foster, Rick LaReno
Hailing from Durham N.C., Pattie
and Jack along with their friends Rick and Mike (also known as the Cedar Creek Band) have shared the stage with the Krüger Brothers on numerous occasions. A mighty wind blew into the studio when they arrived for
their session in Rick’s vintage Volvo.

Clay Lunsford
Clay grew up in an Old Time, Blue-grass and Gospel music family and
performs regularly with his brothers as the “Gospel Voices“. His love for the fingerpicking styles of Chet Atkins, Merle Travis and Jerry
Reed led Clay to become a founding member of the North Carolina Thumb Pickers Association.

Kari Makinen
Back in his homeland, Kari is known as the “Finnish Doc Watson” because of his interpretations of Doc’s music translated into Suomi, the native
language of Finland. We think his very unique version of “Way Downtown” is definitely worth sharing!

Paul Frederick McBride
We heard Fred play his fiddle the first time back in 1997 on our very first visit to the Monday morning cattle sale and farmer’s market in North Wilkesboro. An active member of the Wilkes Acoustic Folk Society, Fred continues the tradition of passing on to a younger generation his knowl-edge, understanding, and passion of Old Time Music.

Melvin and Ruby Roten
We met Melvin and Ruby for the first time on a Sunday afternoon at the Old Town Pickin’ Parlor in Wilkesboro. Their charming renditions of classic country songs were something that we felt would be a wonderful addition to the Scrapbook.

Mike Palmer
Mike and his partner Jerry Minton have over the last several years turned their Music and Pawn shop business into a meeting place and performance venue that has gained recognition
and admiration from musicians and
music lovers from across North Carolina and the neighboring states. An avid guitar collector and expert salesman, Mike can often be found per-forming with Clay Lunsford and
Billy Gee throughout Wilkes County.

Randy Sheppard
A good friend of Tut’s, Randy’s Bluesy R&B style of dobro playing added a nice and different flavor to the Scrapbook sessions.

Tut Taylor
Alumnus of John Hartford’s Aereo-Plane band, flat-picking Dobro legend Tut Taylor still maintains the official
#1 Krüger Brothers Fan spot. We are very proud of that fact. In the Spring of 2004, Tut and his lovely wife Lee sold their house in Maryville Tennessee and made the move to Wilkesboro N.C.

Charles Tesh
A professional songwriter who spent many years in Nashville as a staff
writer for a major music publishing firm, Charles has written and co-written the lyrics to several international award winning and hit songs. He currently spends time teaching his craft in seminars and workshops throughout the United States.

The Coffee Pickers
Kurt and Maria Stadlin have been
friends of ours since the days back in
the “old“ country. They spend rough-
ly half of the year performing all over Europe and the remainder of the year enjoying their refurbished old farm in
Moravian Falls N.C.

Robbin Thompson
After a show we played in Richmond Virginia, Robbin got out his guitar to show us one of his songs that he felt would be a good one for us to record. We liked the song instantly, but really liked the way he performed it, so, we asked him if he’d consider making
the trip to Wilkesboro to record it with us.

Robin Warren and Brian Clancey
From Merrimack New Hampshire comes this classy guitar and violin duo known as “Spirit Fiddle“. We first heard their music at the Fiddler’s Convention in Union Grove several years ago and met up with them once again at the 2004 Convention. Before heading back North they stopped by the studio and left us with some beautiful musical memories.

Pete and Joan Wernick
We’ve known about Pete Wernick through his publications, magazine articles and his recordings with “Hot Rize“ since the early 1980’s, so it
was exciting for us when we got the chance to meet and play with him in 1997. When Pete and Joan were in Wilkesboro for a show in 2004, we seized the opportunity and invited them to come by the studio and record a few tunes. This became the first session for the Carolina Scrapbook Volume Two.
