Funky Folks

This review has been a long time in coming.
There's a lot of reasons for this, but the biggest reason is K'Sapa's musical explorations are so wide-ranging, I haven't known where to begin, much less how.
Let's start with the basics: Kim Martinique's voice is low and sultry, but when it needs to be, it can soar. Folk and jazz are very good mediums for her, and she exploits the genres fully.
The guitar work of Robert Folsom is complex, tight and rhythmic. It does quite well by itself without the need to hide behind a bigger band. He's quite accomplished, and it's a treat to listen to his solos.
The songwriting is diverse. I could imagine myself traveling down a country road under a blue sky on many of the songs like "To be Free", "Swamp Bite" and "Real Fantasy". Then, there are some tunes that drew me into a dark, nightclub-type of mood like "Lies" and "Shallow blues". And then there are two unique instrumentals that defy pigeonholing.
The album is a journey in many respects. Underneath the spectrum of musical explorations K' Sapa never loses its sense of fun. It's like an adventure where you're never sure just what's around the next bend.

Urban Folk never sounded so good. The songwriting duo of Kim Martinique and Robert Folsom team up with well-respected percussionist, Gary Schroeder to form K'sapa. The combination of Kim's jazzy vocals and Robert's energized acoustic guitar work best for me on the songs "To Be Free" and "Your Life's Dance", which are both beautiful and uplifting. Robert shows up his extraordinary guitar talent on the instrumental, "Diane's Dance." Kim cuts loose with true Kansas City Blues vocals on "Shallow Blues." You can tell that K'sapa had fun making this CD and you will have fun listening to it...again and again.
