The melodic scale of Raga Keervani is said to be capable of melting the hardest of hearts. It lends itself to expressing that soulful longing that occurs on the journey to find a Beloved. This universal appeal no doubt accounts for its adaptation into the Hindustani repertoire from South Indian Classical music.
For the musician improvising with sound, there is an art to revealing the form of the raga in harmony with the ambiance of a particular audience. This live recording was made at a concert for an international conference of Sufism and, thus, was a rare chance for the music to become a form of communal worship.
