Album Notes

Greetings from Northern California, home of Humboldt County's own groove rockers, Kulica.

Kulica plays home-made groove rockin' soul-shaking music that is gaining popularity at a rapid pace throughout our region. Kulica's style is a delicate mixture of Dave Matthews Band-like melodies with Jack Johnson and Ben Harper's soulful rhythms, including inspiring lyrics in the same vein as Van Morrison and David Gray, with a hint of Doobie Brothers thrown in for good measure.

Kulica is lead by singer/songwriter/guitarist Curtis Thompson, former bass player of Acoustic Junction (Capricorn Records). After the break up of Acoustic Junction in 2000, Curtis decided to continue his passion for music. With his guitar in one hand and a pencil and paper in the other, Curtis started writing songs for Kulica with his wife, Julie on the bass. Next we found Jason Hodel, who plays the acoustic and electric mandolin and brings with him an eclectic background of influences. Dave Sandomeno plays percussion and Nick Moore lays down the drums. The combination of groove, rock, funk, folk and soul shaking rhythms is an amazing blend that helps give Kulica its signature style.

Kulica's success is best demonstrated by our performance history. Since 2003, Kulica has had the distinct pleasure of opening for such acts as DAVID CROSBY, LITTLE FEAT, THE NEVILLE BROTHERS, LEFTOVER SALMON, RUSTED ROOT'S singer/songwriter MICHAEL GLIBICKI and country legend MERLE HAGGARD. Our diversity enables us to play everything from small coffee shops to mid-size breweries to large festivals, winning crowds over in a variety of music genres wherever we go. Since that time, we have been featured on countless radio stations such as KFOG,KHUM, KHSU, and KSLG radio stations with both live and recorded performances. World Class Rock radio station KFOG, in the San Francisco Bay area, has featured us on "New Release Thursday" and "Acoustic Sunrise Sunday mornings." In 2004 Kulica's song "GROOVE" was included on KFOG's "Local Scene" CD (along with artists such as Jackie Greene, and Michael Franti of Spearhead) which sold over 10,000 copies and all proceeds went to MUSIC IN THE SCHOOLS TODAY!

We are very proud as a band that we have a positive impact wherever we play. Whether you're eight or eighty years old, Kulica can offer you music to refresh your soul and get you groovin'.

Wow! To hear a mandolin again. Nice sounds from the band. Even my 13 year old daughter enjoyed the cuts, particularly the 1st cut on the CD. Kudos to you all.

Great band - feel good groove
author: Ro Davis
First heard the band at a free concert in Arcata. They had 'em dancing on the lawn. I really like the dance tunes, but all the tracks have something to offer. The music is good and reminds me of a lot of great sounds from the past -- not an imitation, but a new synthesis all their own.
