ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes

Who Is KUUMBA FREEQUE?

In a world of clones, drones, and catchy Pop and Rock bands, there emerges a black sheep hell-bent on disturbing the status quo. It’s name: KUUMBA FREEQUE. The lovechild of Funk and Rock, raised by Soul, the band Kuumba Freeque’s name is a combination of the Swahili term “Kuumba,” meaning creativity, and "Freeque," referring to the relentless pursuit of it.

Formed in 2006 under less than common circumstances, this perfectly imperfect band consists of Singer/Songwriter/Production partners tRESAjERELL and K’Monte`. Upon overhearing Her sing during a songwriting session she was having with a group of friends in a Houston café, He instantly and unapologetically interrupted them and invited the singer to “be in a Rock band.” This rude introduction lead to an infamous Brother/Sister bond between the two and an outpour of artistry that eventually took the form of “Rezurekshun,” their debut album.

They come from drastically different musical backgrounds, experiences, and approaches. But the spiritual alignment of the duo allows them to see the beauty in their musical differences and infuse this positive tension into their works. Those fortunate enough to witness any of their studio sessions will attest to their playfully combative style of creating music together. The result: authentic, sensual, beautifully ugly songs that inspire us all to embrace our inner KUUMBA FREEQUE.

Our highly anticipated debut album, "REZUREKSHUN," is a true concept record. Grouped into 3 chapters, "BYRTH, KRUCIFIXION, & REZUREKSHUN," the songs symbolize beautifully ugly life stages & circumstances, all strewn across a Funky & Soulful Rock landscape. A treasure from the exponentially growing Indie Artist circuit.

Great From Start To Finish!
If you like Black Rock and roll ala Lenny Kravitz, Living Colour or Mother's Finest you'll love Kuumba Freeque. It's like a cross between Living Colour and Mother's Finest. The songs are great, the production is flawless and the vocals are rough, rugged, raw and sexy at the same time. Pick this one up TODAY!

The Search For Creativity Ends Now
This blogger is extremely overjoyed because – the “experience” album is finally back. One has to say “album” when a piece of music takes you back to the days when LP artwork was emblazed on a tri-fold album jacket. Well when my Kuumba Freeque Rezurekshun CD arrived I was thrilled to see that it was wrapped in the new eco-friendly cardboard tri-fold and of course the artwork was worth the purchase by itself. Not to be outdone the band takes one on a musical journey of life, love, relationships and spiritual resurrection which is all tied together by the hypnotic guitar driven intro and interludes.

The tightness and eclectic versatility of the band differentiates Kuumba Freeque. Led by group founder/drummer K’Monte and highlighted by the haunting guitar riffs of Robert “Robstar” Barillas set the stage for white hot vocalist tRESA who does not disappoint. Her voice is a perfect raspy combination of a late 70’s rock princess with an attitude and a funk-fueled, soul-stirring Y2K diva that will effortlessly arrest the listeners attention and demand industry respect – make no doubt about it Kuumba Freeque is going places.

The best way to listen to Rezurekshun is to play the CD from beginning to end, although the title track and “Kuumbaanthem” are singles that will launch the band into the national spotlight.

All and all this writer learned one thing listening to the CD (while not realizing that the CD had played three times in its entirety), Kuumba Freeque is one dead serious band that not only pays respect to the heavy metal infused bands of yesteryear but gives a nod to those who can appreciate the way to use the soulful origins of rock and roll to set the stage for their psychedelic funked out revolution.

For those of you that doubt that new music cannot inspire a return to the creative vibe of the 20th Century - go out and purchase Kuumba Freeque’s debut CD Rezurekshun without delay.

Look out for Jan 01, 2012 debut of "The Good Music Blog"
