Album Notes

La Balteuband is a NYC based instrumental ensemble lead by Emilio Teubal. His compositions are a blend of jazz and elements of Argentine music, such as rhythms like chacarera and zamba along with the lyricism of tango melodies.

La Balteuband's music consists of rhythmically and harmonically rich pre-composed structures and improvised sections that highlight the musicality of each member of the band. This is what makes each performance of the group so fresh and special.

The compositional influences of Emilio Teubal include Astor Piazolla, Hermeto Pascual, Egberto Gismonti, and great masters of the jazz tradition such as Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, and Charles Mingus.

La Balteuband has performed in New York venues such as the Knitting Factory, Makor, Cornelia Street Cafe, Nublu, Bowery Poetry Club, Galapagos Arts Space, and many more.

Their music marries jazz, classical and Argentine styles, largely composed, yet with outstanding solos from each one of the band members at some point along the musical journey which begins with the folk rhythm of the brief, bright “A Caballo” and ends with the moody twists and turns of the dense tango-jazz that is “Sin Pestanias”

#2 – Capinias Mariano Gil joins the band for this track, and his flute soars above Emilio Teubal’s resonant piano, Moto Fukushima’s electric bass, and the saxophones. Franco Pinna, on drums, keeps a steady clavé beat. A long piano riff is joined by echoing brass. #4 – Twisted Title Emilio Teubal’s native experience with Latin rhythms and tones gives his piano performance a sultry exoticism, with the addition of whispering cymbals and muted clarinet and saxes. Hints of Argentine tango, especially of the contemporary tango genre, abound. #7 – Berry A mystical clarinet opens this track in rippling crescendos, re-appearing later in a slight rhythmic twist. Emilio Teubal takes a rapid riff with brass and drums in energized backup. #9 – Sin Pestanias This is a moody, reflective piece, with an existential clarinet and saxes in a muted midnight mood. The atmospheric tones end the record in relaxed melancholia.
