notes

New CD of L'Accroche-Choeur, "Noël des Anges", presents 18 a capella Christmas songs.

After the success of "Noël a Capella" appeared in 1997, L'Accroche-Choeur interprets traditional and contemporary Christmas songs, conducted by Jean-Claude Fasel.

"Noël des Anges" expresses the magic and the particular mood of Christmas. Sometimes melancholic, sometimes merry and always full of hope, the harmonizations are between originality and tradition. The traditional international ones like "Minuit, Chrétiens", "Les Anges dans nos campagnes" and of the regional popular airs such "Tsalandè" and "Le Noël de Simon" mix with the contemporary compositions.

Much more than a simple Christmas carols record, this CD is an original gift to offer and look at, since unfolded and avoided of a simple candle, it is transformed ingeniously into Lantern of Christmas, true object of decoration.

Conducted since January 1992 by Jean-Claude Fasel, L'Accroche-Choeur opened at new musical horizons. Thus it presented works of Bach (Magnificat, Jesu meine Freude), Liszt (Via Crucis), Rheinberger (Stabat MATER, Cantus Missae), Brahms (Ein deutsches Requiem), Honegger (king David, Nicolas de Flue), Poulenc (Four motets for a time of Christmas), Rutter (Gloria).

  • You want to have this in your collection!

I first learned of this by searching the internet for swiss choral music and was so pleased in hearing: L'ACCROCHE-CHOEUR, ENSEMBLE VOCAL FRIBOURG: Chansons d'ici. I paid for all the songs and downloaded them and then also ordered the cd for my father. Then I ordered this holiday collection as well...just beautiful!

Although I 'wised up' to this CD after the holidays, I play it most days on my commute down the Hudson River to NYC. This and the new Radiohead CD. It has become a dream on wheels - train wheels. Get it to help yourself get through it all.

  • They put the Christmas back in Xmas!

A beautifully produced truly spiritual experience. Just what one needs when you are about to lose your Christmas dinner if they play another inane santa song on the airwaves! A much needed CD to transport myself back to Christmas in England - almost!

  • Excellent A Cappella Singing and Arrangements
    author: Rhonda

My initial review seems to have been lost. So, here's the rewrite. This album consists of a cappella renditions of Christmas carols and songs. This is a cappella at its finest. The singers have a warm vocal tone and a great blend. All of the arrangements are beautiful; a few are complex, but nothing is showy. Most of the songs are in French and at least one is in Latin. The liner notes are in French & no translation is provided. Providing a translation of song titles and of the liner notes would have been helpful. Although I recognize most of the songs, some of the tunes are not familiar; I would like to be able to look them up, but can't since I can't translate the French titles.

Here is a gorgeous new alternative for holiday music. This breathtaking collection of a cappella seasonal music in French is performed by the L'Accorche-Choeur with heavenly natural reverb so that you feel as if you're sitting in the center of a cathedral, surrounded on all sides by these floating and angelic carols. Highlighting the purity of the human voice, male and female, in exquisite harmony with no need for instrumental backup, "Noël des Anges" certainly moves the spirit and captures the magic of the season.
