La Conchita...Remember A Tribute Album
After days of relentless rain, on January 10, 2005 a powerful act of nature moved the earth in the peaceful community of La Conchita and took the lives of ten wonderful souls. Heartfelt wishes are extended to the families and memory of: Charly Womack, Michael "Tony" Alvis, Michelle Wallet, Raven Wallet, Paloma Wallet, Hannah Wallet, Vanessa Bryson, Christina Kennedy, Josh Morgan and Patrick Roderick. Many musicians on this project have personal ties to those who have passed on and to Folk Mote Music storeowners and housemates who survived being buried in the slide with a huge medical bill while losing their home. Lastly, a portion of the proceeds will be given to La Conchita Community Organization towards efforts of clean up and stabilization of the hillside as well as increasing public awareness about the fragility of an extended part of the coastline.
These are songs about the ocean & the rain...about the community of La Conchita... about musicians, life and angels. The song Turtle Dove is dedicated to the dove that flew to Jimmy Wallet as he stood atop the freshly fallen landslide and flew off towards the Western Gate. At his open mike nights at Muddy Waters in Santa Barbara Charly would end his shows with "I Know You Rider ", a traditional song that came to life with the Grateful Dead's performances. This album ends with that tribute.
Charly Womack was a musical supporter and a musical instigator. He would speak about striving for the "Black Hole"...when all musicians become one. This group of contributors of music, art, and services became one in their desire to reach out to help in the healing.
