The group started out in 1975 as The Family Singers at the home of Julia and Lawrence Abraham, Sr. The group consisted of 10 young men who consisted of brothers and cousins with ages ranging from 6 - 12 years old. Julia Abraham, mother and Aunt of the young boys, was asked to be their manager. Lawrence, Sr., the founder of the group, sang with many different quartets and groups including the Enon Baptist Church Male Chorus, of Washington, DC and also provided assistance to The Family Singers. They credited the Male Chorus with getting them started by taking them on various programs. Over time, members of the group went into the military or away to college, but the remaining group carried on with the Lord by their side.
In 1980, Lawrence, Sr. formed another group which consisted of three of his sons, a nephew, and a close friend Julius Tracy. Julius Tray has now gone on to be with the Lord. The group was named after Lawrence, Sr. calling themselves the LA Specials, honoring Lawrence Abraham, Sr. As time went by, the group expanded with two more of his sons and another nephew.
In 1981, Lawrence Sr. passed away. His wish before he passed was for the group to remain singing and lifting up the name of the Lord through song. The group fulfilled his wishes and continued singing for the Lord. In the late 80s, the two groups decided to combine and call themselves the LA Family Singers. In 1994, Jerel Abraham, grandson of the late Lawrence, Sr., started playing the drums for the group at the age of 4. At that time, he became an official member of the group. The groups has experienced many trials and tribulations, but with God,they remained together with Julia Abraham remaining by their side, as manager.
