wow terrific independant folk rock
author: Josh Estelle
Wow! I just saw Maery and her band perform down in Yellow Springs, OH. I was totally blown away. She's terrific. Her music is full of emotion, and soul. She drives home creative and moving lyrics, all the while backed up by terrific drumming and a fabulous bassist. I bought this CD at the show and I havn't been able to stop listening to it since.

Excellent, varied, emotional music that grips you.

Maery Lanahan is one of those local artists who never fails to amaze me with her talents. Her emotional, angelic voice is the focal point of every song. It draws me in like a siren song and keeps me captivated until she is finished with my ears and mind, then she leaves me and sends me on my way. That doesn't even take into account her guitar playing and songwriting abilities. There is also Alessandro Cortez, who is an excellent bassist and adds such a boost to every song as he intertwines his melodies in with Maery's vocal harmonies. On drums is Brian DeWeese, who plays lightly and makes every beat count.
My two favorite songs are "The Yearning" and "The Promise" which highlight every aspect of the band, especially the range of Maery's voice. To finish off the release Maery may have just written the best love song ever "Two Silhouettes" which truly captures her feelings for her lover. I've seen them play live a few times and it was great to hear them on disc, especially with the addition of a violinist, Megan Palmer. They have one of those very unique sounds, which blends many styles and areas together such as rock, jazz, worldbeat, classical, folk, and singer-songwriter, so comparisons are useless. If you love music that has depth and feeling and is played by accomplished musicians then you'll love Maery. {Grog}

In a nutshell, or cockpit in this case (these folks are from Dayton, Ohio), this
author: David Lilly - Nagariousmag
This music comes out of the darkness of some exotic alley with a strange, sadly romantic aura. Songwriter Maery Lanahan on guitar and vocals, along with bandmates Megan Palmer on violin, Alessandro Cortez on bass and guitar and Brian DeWeese on drums and tabla, played all of this material live in the studio; that’s how they used the free studio time they’d won in a contest. Not only was that a good idea, but it proves this musical unit can deliver the goods without overdubs or other studio tailoring. Lanahan has been performing in public for at least eight years, experiencing several of those as a solo act.
That bass guitar bounds along the sidewalk with apprehension, cautiously gazing here and there in the dark, checking back over its shoulder at the opening and throughout “The Birds.” The guitar also has that feeling that something’s not quite right. Eerie night tonight; a great way to start 45 minutes of music. To me, “Sculpting My Desire with Discomfort” sounds like more of “The Birds,” though maybe reworked a little, and it shares the prize for most interesting song title along with “Tangibly Ghostish.” Regarding “The Yearning,” Lanahan belts forth her strong and emotional vocals with plenty of weaving vibrato that enhances this song, as the music alone speaks for its title. “Circling Currents” ups the ante a bit, continuing the melancholy, but offering a great cleansing; an exorcising of emotional discomfort and pain by belting it out. In a nutshell, or cockpit in this case (these folks are from Dayton, Ohio), this CD has its own flight pattern and is a journey of a different view that you won’t regret experiencing.
I urge you to take time to visit www.maerylanahan.com, read around and listen. Drop Ms. Lanahan a line via maery@maerylanahan.com and ask who put those dots on her cheeks (she’s cuter than Howdy Doody). Also, mark your calendar to head out to Air Devil’s Inn on June 13 to see and hear the Maery Lanahan band and local music heroes Sol 17 share a bill.

5/11 Maery Lanahan rocked Saratoga Springs based Bailey's Cafe
author: Tobias luzerne1@go.com
I first saw the band Maery Lanahan in Saratoga Springs at an Open Mic in Bailey's Cafe. Her band rocked so does the album Live Underwater mostly because of the twists and turns it hurls at the one who listens to it. The music on the album flows in such a weird way it is difficult to describe. You have to love to love this band it is made up of thought provoking elements that they exercise when you see them. This album is what independent music is about for those to listen and be inspired. This album will be heating up hopefully the band will play a show somewhere in my area. If not I'll go see them on tour they are that good. I talked to some other people and they really liked them when they were in Saratoga Springs.
