fans of Hendrix and SRV take note
author: Timothy Schwader
I'm a newbie to the music of Lance Lopez, but I am super glad to be part of his circle of fans now. I found out about this disc through an article at www.kingsx.net which is the website for my favorite band, King's X, whose lead vocalist/bassist Doug Pinnick appears on Wall Of Soul. I bought this disc after learning that Doug sings lead vocals on a track called Time and backing vocals on another song. Doug is amazing, as always. But Lance... holy cow! This cat can flat out PLAY. He clearly has a Hendrix fetish (check out that cover photo!) but he backs it all up with his playing, which is a beautiful mixture of Hendrix, SRV, Santana, and maybe Dime from Pantera. If you are a sucker for guitar shredding, you can't help but be sucked into this disc. But don't think this is a heavy metal wankfest, because it isn't. This disc has SOUL. It grooves in all the right places, has plenty of Latin flavor, and is steeped in Austin blues-rock ala the Vaughan brothers. Lance has a nice vocal style, again falling somewhere between Stevie Ray and Hendrix, and good lyrics. I really dig this disc and I know it will be the centerpiece of many a summertime party at my house!

One of the greatest guitar albums of all time...

At first glance of the album cover one might think, geez not another SRV or Hendrix clone, but when you hear the pure SONIC SOUL that pours from the speakers you will know that LANCE LOPEZ is his own man. You will certainly hear the influence of Hendrix and SRV but you will also hear a truly unique young guitarist/producer/songwriter fly through space and time with his Stratocaster/Marshall stack combo. From the heavily phase-shifted intro riffs of Love/Hate Relationship to the last flamenco-inspired fingerpicking of Time, Lopez serves up a versatile mix of Blues,Jazz,Funk and Rock that none of his young guitar rivals are even attempting. If this album would've been released between 1973 and 1975 Lance Lopez would already be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But that's not to say that this album is dated, these are just different times. Maybe one day the major American record labels will wake up and sign this visionary...
