(circa-nyc-late 90’s)
after the break up of the r & b band, mack daddy, in the mid-
nineties, frustrated drummer, landon finnerty decided it was time
to hit the studio, ala’ todd, and do a solo album of back logged
songs, that he’d been writing. realizing that the one instrument
he wasn’t comfortable with, was bass, he called childhood friend,
mike fabian, to do the bass work. they’d go into the studio, teach fabian the song, lanny would hop on the drums, and fabian would
teach him back the song, and lay in the rhthym track. that
done, lanny would add on the other instruments and vocals.
or, he would go out, work until he had enough money to head
back into the studio, to repeat this process.
it actually took a few years, and, at times, when friends passed
through town, he would draft them, stick a guitar in thier hands,
and make them add some inspiration. which is how we landed
mark hanley, (guitar for sister ray) to play a totally amazing
lead on “gray matter destroy”.
as this project was finishing up, we spoke with our contact
who was working in indy music, but, had moved on to a more main
stream company, and his words were,” i can do something if you
can promise me a million in sales?” did i mention he had gone
mainstream? viva la difference! so out of frustration, i sort of
shelved the whole thing, and handed them out to friends. i was
working all the time, and, couldn’t offer the time needed to push
this product, out into the world. later, i ran into another
friend, william brooks, and he mentioned “CD Baby”. (you’ll
find williams albums here, too!) and viola’ that brings me to
this point. the album combines my ohio rock and roll roots,
with my new york rock and roll. it’s fun and powerful.
lanny finnerty is currently playing with new york band, “18”
eighteen, so you should keep your eyes to CD Baby for the
upcoming 18 cd, spring, 2007.
enjoy! lanny finnerty
