Superb contemporary jazz album

I bought this record in 2001 and only knew Larry as a hard rock bass player (Unruly Child, Sircle of Silence, Hurricane). Village Stut is a great collection of contemporary jazz songs (not smooth jazz please!). The melodies are never boring - unlike on many smooth jazz reocrds IMHO - and Larry's bass playing is absolutely superb from A to Z. With Abe Laboriel's "Guidum", this is probably my favourite bass player album ever.

It's always a pleasure to find a bass player fronting a band ~ and this does not dissapoint. His tone is, for me, reminiscent at times of Marcus Miller, big but with plenty of attack. The appearance of one of my all time guitar faves, Steve Oliver, is a bonus! This album has a great vibe and is decidedly funky but remains convincing in more reflective moments. Superb and highly recommended!

Beautiful and sophisticated

Larry's album is beautiful and sophisticated, yet has moments of lighthearted playfulness that will make you smile out loud. Intricate melodic basslines weave through interesting chord progressions on every tune and his vocals are mighty impressive...this cat can sing! His lyrics are touching on the tunes that have them, but the instrumental tracks are so smokin' that you won't miss the presence of a vocal track. All in all - a must have album for anyone's jazz collection. Keep it coming, Larry!
