Album Notes

The new release from Chicago bassist/composer Larry Gray, “One Look” by the Larry Gray Trio is a deep, mutifaceted work of original compositions. Gray’s strong bass, with equal amounts of arco and pizzicato forms an amazing partnership with Jim Trompeter’s forward reaching harmonies and masterful lines and the fiery, inventive and intuitive drumming of Dana Hall. There is a wealth of variety here, ranging from the sublime melody of One Look, to the fiery urgency of Gravity. Two shoter solo bass (arco) improvisations balance the other nine group performances. The CD visits many places but never without a sense of flow and of unity.

REVIEWS

An excellent outing from a veteran Chicagoan
author: Matt Nischan
In his 3rd and most recent album One Look, Larry Gray has clearly cemented himself as not only one of the premiere jazzmen in Chicago, but also as one of the most talented composers. With lilting sinusoidal lines reminiscent of Dave Holland or John Pattitucci, Gray creates a solid canvas upon which veteran pianist Jim Trompeter and drummer Dana Hall are allowed to paint with subtle tenacity. Starting with the high impact Sofia's Dream and ending with the more introspective One Look, this effort rarely wavers in its direction and poise. Highly recommended.

best bass player in Chicago!!!
author: Mark Sorlie
I heard cuts from this CD on the radio a few weeks ago and I knew I had to have it. Being a bass player myself I recognize Larry as the consummate player. Pitch, feel, notes are all as they should be. And nobody does arco like that. The whole trio is top shelf, so I recommend this to all who like small group interaction in a variety of settings. Buy it and enjoy !!
