ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"This place where you are right now
God circled on a map for you."

Hafiz, 14th Century Sufi mystic, is the most beloved poet of Persia. His powerful poems on the longing of human beings for reunion with the divine, on the many-faceted mysteries of love, and of encouragement on the spiritual path, have inspired countless people for centuries.

To this very day, throughout Iran and other countries in the region, Hafiz's poetry is not only read from books but also sung, accompanied by musical instruments. This recording brings Hafiz's translated lyrics back into this rich, ancient tradition of poetry set to music. With these gorgeous melodies, Hafiz's lines dance off the page! These newly created settings, beautifully sung and performed on a variety of instruments, bring the magic of music to these timeless lyrics.

Daniel Ladinsky has published three volumes of Hafiz’s poetry in translation — I Heard God Laughing, The Subject Tonight Is Love, and The Gift. These three books have made it possible for people throughout the English-speaking world to fall in love with, and be inspired by the poetry of Hafiz.

Laszlo Slomovits is one of the twin brothers in the family music duo, Gemini. His songs are featured on award-winning recordings, and used in schools throughout the country. In addition, he has two solo recordings of Rumi’s poetry set to music: Give Light and Gamble Everything for Love.

"You have been invited to meet the Friend.
No one can resist a Divine Invitation."

A wonderful collection...
Laz has such talent for bringing the world's greatest poets to life with music, and he does this again with Hafiz. I have all of Laz's CDs and this one is yet another wonderful collection of poem songs. Laz has a way of bringing out the essence of Hafiz's words with just the right melody...which deepens the meaning for me. I love all of the arrangements...often exotic, sometimes mysterious, thoughtful. "A Divine Invitation" and "This Place" are two of my favorites.

Great soundtrack for daily life!
I love Laz's music, and this album is no exception. He has such an ear for melodies. These are some of my favorite "attitude adjustment" songs. They help me realign myself when I get off track. As always, the well-crafted tunes make the poetry even richer. Special favorites: Fear is the Cheapest Room in the House (so true), Pulling Out the Chair (his arrangement beautifully complements the light-hearted ego-busting lyrics), and When the Violin (can forgive the past, it starts singing!).
