notes
This CD is a down-to-the-bones expression of blues and folk that you'll want for your collection. Each song transforms the listener. The sound on "Grey Matters" is remarkable with a palpable presence and a warm, intimate immediacy. There's something timeless about Susan's melodies and rhythms, a sense that the songs could easily have been written either yesterday or forty years ago. Lyrically, though, they're thoroughly contemporary, if not so much in theme then in attitude. She adroitly avoids the 'sensitive singer-songwriter' trap, instead displaying an unapologetic strength and a refreshing resilience.
Susan's guitar playing is superlative and her voice combines a bourbon-and-sandpaper rasp with the smoothness of brushed velvet. What stands above everything is the quality of the songs. Each track is reminiscent of some classic genre, moving smoothly from jazz to folk to bluegrass to blues while maintaining an impeccable quality of songwriting that leaves the listener transformed. The overall experience is stunning.

Well worth getting!
author: MariaI heard this CD in a tiny little jazz bar in Japan, and finally managed to get a copy here. I've had it played at my local bar, and it makes for great background music. Just as good if you want to lay back and listen to the lyrics as well. Very enjoyable!
Refreshingly intelligent, musical
author: Shevee MoreuxIt is such a pleasure to listen to a singer-songwriter who is this original and yet reminiscent of so many traditional musical forms. Susan avoids cliche both musically and lyrically in this cd. She builds beautiful poetic images in The Ghosts are Out, waxes philosophical in A Bit of Good Luck, and rejects the mundane in Whatever; and she does it all with a delicious irony and an accomplished musical groove. I can't wait for her next album!
