Cinematic, spacious and poetic, the songs of Laughingstock pull you in with layered textures and driving rhythms while celebrating the victories, defeats, and spirituality of the every day.
At the band's core are vocalist/Chapman Stick player Alex Nahas and drummer/backing vocalist Mark Bernfield. While Nahas provides the lyric and melodic foundations for the songs, the process of developing and shaping their structure, texture, and mood is a truly collaborative one, a result of countless hours of playing together and exchanging ideas.
Laughingstock's sound is complemented by innovative collaborations with cellist Zoe Keating, violinist Milton Cross, keyboardist Eric Glick Rieman, and producer Lee Townsend (best known for his work with Bill Frisell, Kelly Joe Phelps, John Scofield, Charlie Hunter, and Noe Venable), who have all contributed greatly to the band's sonic scope.
On stage, the broad and unusual sounds of the Chapman Stick permit Nahas to cover a range from deep, earthy bass to shimmering highs, supporting his smooth baritone vocals. This, coupled with Bernfield's extensive palate of percussive textures, infectious drum grooves, and soaring backing vocals allow the duo to deliver a lush and dynamic musical experience.

Textured and dynamic

This band came on to my radar because I was searching for music along the lines of the last two Talk Talk albums, which were a kind of ground zero for post-rock. Laughingstock's music is clearly influenced by those influential albums, but is so much more than mimicry or a tribute. You can believe every bit of the Album Notes you'll find above; what I keep coming up with only paraphrases things said there. I'm not really sure that I'd call it "Progressive Rock" but it's certainly rock that's quite progressive.
Sadly, this was the last of three albums by the band. "Clown" and "Moth" are just as highly recommended as this one. I've been unable to find out anything more about current projects by Nahas, but I do hope he resurfaces.
