Album Notes

Laura Pole is a singer-songwriter based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. For over 15 years, she has been performing across the country with Trifolkal, the "far-sighted folk trio fiercely dedicated to fun!" Her collaborative recordings with trio members Greg Trafidlo and Neal Phillips have earned high praise from Dirty Linen, Sing Out!, Steve Gillette and Billy Edd Wheeler among others. Her voice is her finest instrument, and what an instrument it is---pure, beautiful and moving---often compared to Judy Collins, who indeed was one of Laura's early musical influences.

Laura gives you the following glimpse into "Born to Sing", her first solo CD project:

In April 2004, I had a fortuitous reunion with my summer camp friends Dona, Casey and Liz. There can be no gathering of campy pals without singing. After nearly 2 hours of making music, they looked at me and said, "Laura, you're in your prime-it's time you recorded your own CD."

That was the conception of this CD, originally titled "In My Prime". Somehow, that theme just didn't cut it ---it seemed a bit self conscious, arrogant, and mostly scary, because if "now is my prime, it's all downhill from here"! Then the Muses swooped in and rather persuasively "changed my cover tune" from "In My Prime" to "Born to Sing".

I have to say that I love this song and I love this CD---creating it reminded me of what's essential for my well-being. Much the way taking music lessons healed me from asthma, making this CD brought the healing that comes from knowing I'm living my life's purpose. "Though I once sang to live, now I live to sing". I hope that when you listen to this music, you will be delighted. And most of all, I hope you will have a glimmer of the tender love and deep passion that suffused this entire creation.

Love the melody, love the nostalgia, love the combination of acappella and sax on Alfi. This work is clean and clear. It rings back to the value and personality of the voice, before the glamour and MTV.
