Album Notes

Laura Smith was born in Minnesota and moved to Los Angeles before her first birthday. She grew up singing with her father as he played guitar, and began writing her own songs at the age of fourteen on her father's guitar. She got her own axe soon after and has never looked back. Her influences range from Patsy Cline, Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, and Merle Haggard, to the Cramps, the Ramones, the Beatles, and the Sex Pistols. These influences can be heard in the sound of her first breakthrough band, Sister Swing. During the 80's, she toured up and down the Hollywood and Sunset Strips before ending up in Georgia. Once there, she played the Hoard Tour, and opened up for Cheap Trick, Seven Mary Three, and one of her idols, Joan Jett with her band, Glasspack. Laura moved back to Los Angeles, and has been working on several projects since returning home. She recorded an album with the mellow and hauntingly psychedelic band Wind-Up Doll, before recording her latest and greatest work, Adult Entertainers, Child Educators with the Laura Smith Quartet. The Laura Smith Quartet arose out of Laura's need to express herself artistically, and to explore her own voice in a completely different sonic landscape, moving away from the pure rock oriented stylings of her previous groups, and moving towards the hybrid sound of pop, dance, funk, rock, and electronica heard on this album. Tracks like 'Not in Love' and 'Close to Me' reveal the beauty, vulnerability, and tenderness in her voice, while tracks like 'All Right, All Ready' and 'DEF' put her back in familiar territory and allow her to straight out rock. Adult Entertainers, Child Educators was recorded in Los Angeles, and produced by the Good Ol' Boys (Jason Domantay and Joseph Charles Swenson), who are also well known club DJ's in Los Angeles. Guitarist JP Swenson and guest drummer Jason Kisvardy were brought in to complete the elixir that resulted in one of the most impressive albums of 2006.

REVIEWS

author: Hybrid Magazine
Musically schizophrenic female-led music of strange beauty from heavy electronic to folk. Cool sounds. Neat.
