In the late 90's Laurice Monica Martinez sang with James Brown. He was quoted as saying she was 'a protege' and 'one to watch'. At about the same time she featured with James Brown in the movie 'Blues Brothers 2000'. Not a bad cast to share credits with; BB King, Issac Hayes, Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton etc etc etc.
In late 2003, BMI songwriter Dave Coe from Liverpool in the UK, teamed up with LA producer Eric Michael Cap on a new Soul Music / Funk project. Laurice was a natural choice as vocalist and the album 'Laurice' was the outcome.
Laurice's singing took the songs to a new level, from the pure 70's style Funk dance floor filler, 'It's a Funky Thang' to the Soulful torch ballad 'Give Me Back My Heart'. The album goes a long way to fulfilling Mr James Brown's predictions about his young protege - Laurice Monica Martinez
The influencial 'Blues and Soul' magazine in the UK sent 'Watching the City Come Alight' from the 'Laurice' album straight to number 12 in their Autumn Soul Top Twenty, above Jill Scott and Anita Baker. Reviewing the album they again focused on 'Watching the City Come Alight'. "Best of the bunch is 'Watching the City Come Alight', it's got a decent melody an infectious chorus. Through it all Laurice's voice is strong and soulful' (B&S Oct 2004)
The funky dance track 'Its a Funky Thang' has been played on radio stations and clubs across the party island of Ibiza. The dj at the world famous Pachas called it 'a breath of fresh air'

Funk-R&B-Soul fusion from a gal who can really sing!
author: Funky Diva
This is a great CD mix of Funk-R&B-Soul fusion from a gal who can really sing! Laurice used to sing backgrounds for the late great James Brown and you can certainly hear the GodFather of Soul's influence on the title track - It's a Funky Thing. Honey is another great funk/soul track. 2 other stand outs are the groovin' Watchin' The City and the killer ballad Baby It's Up To You. Great songs, great vocals and excellent production by Eric Michael Cap.
