Album Notes

The Delmarva peninsula. Asbury Park, New Jersey. Hermiston, Oregon.
Love, Steely Dan, The Butthole Surfers, Autechre.
Since 1999 Portland, Oregon's "The Lawn" have been baffling themselves.

"What is the sound of..." is a question they refuse to answer in words.
4 chords are never enough.
A Zen Koan of craftsmanship, honed in obscurity. 14 songs.
Languid, fluid, angular, uptight.
Disparate elements kiss (metaphorically) in a wood paneled basement. Heavy meadow. The Lawn.

Wow, wow, wow, and wow! This isn't Bobby Jo-Jo's home CD project he did one weekend with his Ibenez and an ADAT machine. No sir, this is a fully realized fluid RECORD ALBUM, in the purest sense of the term. A dying artform breathes again in What Is The Sound of...? Sure, take the elements I love so much from The Meat Puppets, Sebadoh, and Polvo and throw them in a blender with some bottom shelf beer and you will have something that resembles The Lawn. But it won't really be The Lawn because you forgot to add that mystical secret ingredient that only the members of The Lawn behold. A classic.

Sometimes I am reminded of another great period in American History. The Delmarva experience of The Avatars. Gentle sounds for lovemaking flow like an endless ripple from the mighty Columbia. Take heed. The year of the lawn is here!
