Album Notes

The Law of Fives - 21st Century Rock & Roll

"Correctly formulated, the Law [of Fives] is All phenomena are directly or indirectly related to the number five, and this relationship can always be demonstrated, given enough ingenuity on the part of the demonstrator."
-- Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea, the Illuminatus! Trilogy

The Law of Fives plays melodic rock influenced by '60's & '70's guitar bands and '90's alternative. The group features guitarist, singer and chief songwriter Christopher Gwinn (who also founded the band) and bassist and singer Jordan Block - they are currently supported on drums by Ethan Shorter. All three members are committed non-conformists that aspire to set musical trends rather than chase after them.

The latest Law of Fives CD (released in June 2005) is entitled "Love & Industry", containing eleven new songs penned by Gwinn and Block. Previously, they self-produced and released two full-length CD's, "Obelisk" (Summer 2002) and "Plexor's Lament" (Fall 2003), both of which garnered positive reviews and received college radio play in the Northeast. XM Satellite Radio added several of their songs to their Unsigned channel (where they remain in daily rotation), and in 2002-2003 the song "Waste Away" spent seven weeks on Unsigned's Top 20 Most Played chart. The Law of Fives debuted live in New York City in January 2002 and has been performing regularly at well-known clubs and colleges throughout the New York City area and New England ever since. From their secret lair in Hell's Kitchen the group is hatching a plot to tour regionally throughout the US in 2005 in support of their new disc.

Great CD, great live shows

I've seen these guys a few times now. They definitely put on a great show. I actually caught their CD release party for this album and was physically drained by time they stopped playing at 2am. Full electric set and then a second set featuring just the lead guitar player and bass player playing random covers, requests, and original material. I think the whole show was 4+ hours long... I don't know, I was really drunk by the end of it. Oh, and the CD kicks ass too... rock!

The Law of Fives new CD Love and Industry is a real life example of depth, variety, and creativity in an alternative album. The band manages to incorporate classic rock-inspired melodies with contemporary and innovative themes. Each song on the album has its own distinctive flavor making the CD a continually interesting listening experience. But all the intense musical disection, evaluation, and interpretation aside, this album is just great listening. Every time, I find new things in the music that make me enjoy it more and more. If you are into rock and roll that really concentrates on the music, you will not be dissapointed with this album. Finally a new rock band, that doesn't quickly become like every other rock band.

If you are sick of some music managers trying to make big bucks on some picked up girl on the street by sitting in a studio for a while and bring out all that crap they play these days then you will have the honor of experiencing a well written, played and arranged CD if you decide to give it a shot. You will find it a refreshing CD that deserves to be listened closely and not to be played in a hotel lounge. Great work! PS I personally like Jordan Block's songs the most. Great musician!!!

This CD is great, and the songs are refreshingly orginal. At times I wish there were more solos, but the ones that are there are fantastic. Its nice to hear a CD that is not mainstream rock being pumped out by washed up bands. These guys put their hearts into writing this CD, they put their hearts into every performance (of which I have had the pleasure to see a couple) and they make it very much worth it to grab this album.
