Layabout's debut EP serves notice that a jazz sensibility is perfectly capable of elevating the pop/rock genre into an entirely new realm of emotional immediacy.

The band's songs, written by founder Edward "Tex" Miller, emanate from the band's musical center - the keyboards. Enhanced with a bold palette of brass instrumentation, the tunes evoke an amalgamation of diverse influences. Touching on the ensemble serenity of Lambchop, the emblematic harmonic colors of Claude Debussy, and the ruminative horn arrangements of Steely Dan, the band has created an altogether original and captivating sound.

The rhythmic interplay between acoustic bass and electric piano in perfect balance with a percussive swing; the gentle undercurrent of trumpet, trombone, and alto saxophone on top of which compelling lyrics unfold; the vocal delivery, sometimes vulnerable, sometimes forthright, and always convincing, which unifies this work - all can be heard within the eight tracks that comprise "Honest Woman."
