“Blues is a natural fact, is something that a fellow lives. If you don't live it, you don't have it. Young people have forgotten to cry the blues. Now they talk and get lawyers and things.”
-Big Bill Broonzy
A band does not play the blues because it is a genre of music that leads to instant fame. They do not play the blues because radio stations or music television are dying to play it. They play the blues because they have no choice. It is as much a part of them as their skin and bones. Texas’ Lazy J and the Dirty Shuffle have recently developed a reputation as one such band.
With a deep passion for blues and a love for the live show, Lazy J and the Dirty Shuffle treats every song they play as though it may be their last. They formed in 2002 and got their start playing open jams at Cutters Texas Music Hall and Wild West Cantina. From there, they toured Texas for a year, and then took time off to hone their musical skills and polish their act before performing all over their home state once again.
Straying from the norm, Lazy J and the Dirty Shuffle brings other elements into their blues style, such as jazz, country, and rock. In their own words, “blues is more than just playing the right kind of guitar or having the right look. The feeling of real blues comes from deep inside and cannot really be explained, but you certainly have to feel it from the depths of your heart.” They contend that it isn’t necessarily the lyrics that make their songs what they are, but the feeling and emotions behind them.
In 2008, Lazy J and the Dirty Shuffle introduced a new drummer to the band, adding a different dimension to their own brand of blues. With a new member their sound has become even more distinct. The live shows were, and always will be, most important to them. No two performances are ever alike. Lazy J and the Dirty Shuffle is proud that the results may vary, but the passion level is always the same. They are committed to connecting with audiences, and are fueled by the reaction they get.
Now that there first CD is here, Lazy J and the Dirty Shuffle is moving forward in their musical career. They plan to continue writing songs, playing shows, and improving their sound. More importantly, Lazy J and the Dirty Shuffle hopes to recruit blues fans and spread the music to as many people as possible. If they succeed, it will be because people are drawn to the blues as Lazy J and the Dirty Shuffle live and breathe them.
