Album Notes

Lawrence Cresswell, who hails from Kitchener-Cambridge, Ontario, has played fingerstyle guitar on the acoustic and classical guitar for over 25 years. He considers himself basically self-taught, despite formal training in theory and performance with the Royal Conservatory of Music and with several private tutors. His personal style of guitar playing draws upon various performance techniques such as rhythm methods and accompaniment styles, although he has come to favour finger-style and methods common to early and contemporary music.

It is from both the acoustic and classical guitar that Lawrence obtains sincere satisfaction, for he feels they allow him to more fully explore the expressive potential of the instruments, both as a performer and as a composer. While the majority of his own compositions have been written for solo guitar, he has developed arrangements for guitar and flute, synth string accompaniments and various sizes of vocal ensembles and choirs.

“Great Horizons” by Lawrence Cresswell is a delightful CD and a treat for the ears and imagination. The 11 tracks on this recording are simply a wonderful blend of “relaxing” and “energizing.” With touches of folk, adult contemporary, atmospheric, and even the occasional medieval strain, “Great Horizons” is open, light, and melodically satisfying. Especially enjoyable are “Wave Soaring” (#3) and “Trails” (#7). Inspired by landscapes and the natural world, in many places Cresswell communicates beautifully the great joy of being alive: the confident and gentle voice of his guitar sings a tuneful spirit of rejoicing. By turns sweet and stirring, and at just under one hour running time, you will find this CD to be a real treat.

A wonderful compilation of instrumental music that so enthralled our family we took it with us on a trip to New Zealand. It was like having a friend from home along for the ride and provided many hours of listening pleasure. Mr. Cresswell has chosen some lovely tunes for this CD; each one is sure to evoke pleasant memories for any who listen.

I enjoyed listening to this CD as it reminded me of lazy summer days, gazing at the stars, while I sat beside a cool Algonquin lake. It was oh so easy to listen to, but at times, excited me as the tempo picked up as in "Trade Winds". I enjoyed the subtle drumming sound in "Huronia" which reminds us of our ancestral roots. I think that we could all identify with Mr. Cresswell's love of nature and the simple things in life. A wonderful listening experience.
