Cascade Blues Associations "Blues Notes" Review- Aug. 2003
Lee Blake is a gratifying part of the Portland music scene! He's a powerful singer and an ardent guitarist, focusing on interpreting Blues, R&B and Roots music. He knows his stuff, he knows what he likes, and knows how to deliver the goods!
Lee rips, twists and growls his way through 13 captivating songs on the new release. And, this time around,Lee who is a marvelous interpreter of classic Blues and Roots-Rock, has included four original songs. His"Down to the Ocean" is a big time shuffle with sizzling slide guitar and glaring Blues vocals. The title track, is a beautiful instrumental with Lee playing some super slide His song "Weather Report," took an award given by The Portland Music Association (PMA) back in 1991 for "Best Blues Song". Lee revisits it here and makes the most of it with funky guitar licks, whiskey toned vocals, an showcases his top notch band of Michael Kearsey on bass, and Johnny Moore on drums
Of all the cover tunes on the outing, his version of Taj Mahal"s "Jellyroll," jumps to the front of the pack. Lee really gets down with a solid renditioon of this tune and more smokin' slide work to boot However, his cover of Jimmy Reed's "Found Love" is stellar too! He plays the slide on the Regal Steel, once again, and it's "goooood stuff"
There are covers of Van Morrison, Bob Dylan and, of course, Jimi Hendrix on the CD, all done well, but Lee always finds a way to take a tune and do it his way and the results are very pleasing to the listener.
Why don't you check out the Lee Blake Band for yourself and hear what I'm talking about. It's raw, bold, rootsy blues.
