ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Folksong is a 2 disc set featuring a HD DVD film of Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion's unforgettable Valentine's Day 2008 show at The Maverick Saloon (Santa Ynez, CA) and an accompanying audio-only CD of the 13 songs performed that special evening. Folksong includes four new compositions and highlights Sarah Lee and Johnny's caressing harmonies, high-lonesome folk melodies and unadorned American roots music. Folksong is currently available at http://www.sarahleeandjohnny.com . and cd baby!

"The Folksong DVD is an invaluable portrait of Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion, live onstage doing what they do best: playing and singing songs that they wrote. The exquisitely intimate camera work illuminates both the small details and the big picture of their performance, enhanced by crisp and clear audio recording of their voices and guitars. First-rate new songs ("Never Far From My Heart," "When The Lilacs Are In Bloom") share space with favorites from their catalogue ("River," "Kindness"); the accompanying audio- CD includes an additional track ("Mornin's Over"), while the DVD features two terrific bonus cuts ("Holdin' Back" and "Eyes Like A Levee"). On the DVD's title track, they cast the family's generational net both forward and backward, with daughter Olivia joining them to sing lyrics written by Sarah Lee's grandfather, Woody, in 1950, and set to music by Sarah & Johnny more than half a century later. The real beauty of Folksong is a simple one: It makes you feel like you were right there in the room at the Maverick Saloon, taking in Sarah & Johnny's joyous performance from the front row." - Peter Blackstock, No Depression

"The last time I saw Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion play here in town, the performance was an absolute treat. Country-tinged folk songs with incredibly amusing stories in between made for a memorable night. This past weekend I had the chance to see the husband and wife team perform again, at the Circular Congregational Church downtown. I am ashamed to say that, with almost 30 years of Charleston residency under my belt, I had never been inside of that building. Well, besides being a church, it also happens to be one of the more unusual places I've ever seen a show." -Devin Grant, Charleston Post and Courier

"The distinguishing feature throughout is the couple's caressing harmonies, which carry on the legacy of Johnny and June, Gram and Emmylou." -Maverick

"Welch and Rawlings apart - its hard to recall two modern country voices that dovetail as elegantly as this husband and wife team... A dream." -Uncut

Folksong and more
I bought this double CD (CD+DVD) at the end of their concert in Sarzana, Italy. It's a nice live recording and the new songs are as good as the old ones. It means they are not stopping making good music. The live banter is also very enjoyable, especially the part about the numbers, the road and the motorway exits. While this live combo is good, I think the new material deserves a studio album. If you like 70s folk-rock with a bit of country poured in an enjoy male/female harmonies à la Gram and Emmylou, then buy this album. It won't disappoint.
To Sarah and Johnny: please come back to Italy next year!
