Leeni's "8 Bit Heart" creates a clever and uniquely lyrical chiptune experience through nine tracks of nice bitpop. Chiptunes are not generally known for their lyrics, as that is not the focus of most 8-bit bands and music, but Leeni proves that it is quite possible to sing along with bleeps and blops from old gaming systems. She does so very well, with music that she herself created on her own GameBoy. For her first chip-album, Leeni also proves herself to be talented even though her first release was acoustic guitar and not 8-bit based. The album opens with the lengthy "Raw Footage", which includes a decent GameBoy melody but not very encouraging lyrics. This brings up one of the album's overall faults--namely, that a considerable amount of tracks have rather dark-sided and downhearted messages to them. We bounce back in the more uplifting second and third tracks, however, which have more appropriate and happy lyrics. "Deafening", track number four, has a nice main melody to it but still stands as the most inappropriate and downhearted song on the album. "Death's Little Brother" comes next; a fun, upbeat track with quick lyrics and ambiently beautiful chorus-segments. "Magic Machine" is a sweet track that introduces acoustic guitar along with the chiptune melody and vocals, and the results are pretty good. "Perfection Interrupted" starts off good and reveals itself to be another catchy, upbeat-style track, although it is rather dark-sided. "Live Asleep", track eight, is a nice and long expression of desire, with more guitar included. The final song, "Over and Over", isn't the best in itself but still manages to retain some catchy-ness. Leeni's "8 Bit Heart" album is worth checking out if you're a chiptune fan, or even if you're not, as it is a more gentle introduction into a side of 8-bit not too commonly seen.
