Album Notes

Lee Roy Smilee is three brothers from Brooklyn who have been on the local New York music scene for several years. Tom Roberto, Mike Roberto and John Roberto are songwriters and multi-instrumentalist who not only write their own material, but play all the needed instruments and within the three members, handle all vocal responsibilities. Drawing influences from some of the greatest British bands of the 60's and 70's, Lee Roy Smilee adds a modern twist to this sound with clear production, clever arrangements, and a solid sense of melody. Handling the production of their music leaves Lee Roy Smilee free to experiment and use the studio as a blank canvas to create a full song filled with depth, emotion and raw guts and power.

REVIEWS

Overall, an impressive work by a very talented family.

Pleasantly surprised at the quality of the musicianship, lyrics, and vocals. Below is a quick review of the CD; bear in mind that I am a guitar-driven rock/blues guy, and with that comes a slew of inherent biases that may prevent me from fully appreciating all of the tracks on the disc. I'll Slip Away - great hook, emotionally stirring. My favorite track on the CD. Set Me Free - a bit bland; too Light FM for me. You've Got it All - slow, classic rocker straight out of the 1960s. Would fit nicely on an early Rolling Stones album! Electronic People - slightly nasal lyrics and a subdued guitar. Sounds like a rabbi singing Top-40 hits at a bah mitzvah. Unrequited Love - an awesome track, loaded with pathos. Elicits all sorts of emotion. Great marriage of vocals, lyrics, and music. Are You Feeling Higher - a song about the mythical Lee Roy Smilee, a very pleasant listen. Good guitar work, too. Dreamer's Life - has a bit of a "Ticket To Ride" quality to it. A pleasant listen. Tedium - very different-sounding, sort of ELO meets "Fiddler on the Roof". When did that lying bastard Josephus join the band? Too Much To Pray For - If I wanted to listen to Jose Feliciano, I would've cut off my ears first! Why - a bit lugubrious, but thought-provoking. Has potential to grow on you. If You Want - too commercial-sounding for me. Something about it screams out, "Cinco de Mayo beer advertisement"... Purple Onions - If you like the Moody Blues (without the pretension), you'll enjoy this track. Overall, an impressive work by a very talented family. Have to love the recording studio name - He's Dead Jim Studios. Likewise, the new EP title, “Get Off of My Property, Varmit!” - unique as hell!

Get out the bell bottoms

The songs on this CD from this local band do show a clever sence of song writing. The melodies are sharp, tuneful and catchy. The production has me thinking if Lennon, Mercury and Wilson were to get together to produce a band, this would be the end product. The MONO mixes of three of the tracks work well that it brings you back to the days when Capital Records was bleeding the Beatles dry with different mixes and album packages. Good job over all.
