Album Notes

Leisure Alaska took Denmark by surprise when their first single “Hey There Mr.” entered the Danish video chart at a startling #1. The setting of the video was a surreal 3D animated landscape where ears flew, mouths walked and noses crawled. The video was a puzzling yet intelligible look in to the world of Leisure Alaska. It gave their debut album “The Deja in my Vu” an impressive kick off and thus formed a big and important chapter in the ongoing story of Leisure Alaska.
The beginning of the story, however, took place in a less mysterious place. The three guitarists that eventually founded Leisure Alaska met for the first time on the rooftop of a shopping centre. Bjarke Søballe Andersen, Andreas Fog-Petersen and Jakob Rasmussen took part in the same rapelling course. Despites the non-musical content of this event they got to talking about the rock bands they all enjoyed and the fact that they all just started playing guitar. They decided to form a trio. Since rehearsal rooms were hard to come by in their neighbourhood – a small Danish island – they met up at each others houses and recorded weird sounding songs on cassette tapes.
Come time come ambition. The three young men did not want to hide their talents forever. So they moved to Copenhagen – both musically and officially the capital of Denmark. Here they found the British bass player Neil Grimes and the drummer Kasper Rasmussen who both had a superb understanding of the dynamics that the guitarists were trying to build between their instruments and vocals. The local producer Joshua seemed to agree that the five people now forming the live set up were a perfect match. After one of their highly energetic shows Joshua jumped on to the stage and insisted that Leisure Alaska would come and try out his new studio with him. After recording a few demos with the band Joshua decided to form a record label and release their debut album. And thus Leisure Alaska began their long ascend that would take them much higher than simple shopping centre rooftops.

Hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, Leisure Alaska, I suspect, will be making great big tidal waves of joyful noise in the United States very soon. Bjarke Søballe, Jakob Rasmussen and Andreas Joachim Fog-Petersen’s music has captivated me since I first heard them on garageband.com. In a blind music review process, I was served ‘Transistors in My Mind’ and was instantly smitten with their sound. Rarely do I hear something once and think to myself, ‘I must know who this is and I must have this album.’ I was heartbroken to find that the CD wasn’t available in the US. After a few e-mails to the band and much whining and stomping, I finally received notice from Bjarke that they had placed the CD for sale at CD Baby. I ordered three and to my delight, each song on Leisure Alaska’s self-produced The Deja in My Vu, was just as infectious as ‘Transistors in My Mind,’ if not more so. On an initial listen, you get sucked in to the sticky guitar hooks and melodies. The second round you find that not only is the musicianship extraordinary, the songwriting is thoughtful in its simplicity and extraordinary in its execution. By the third listen, you realize that The Deja in My Vu listens like potato chips eat, addictive and always leaving you wanting more. Sidebar: The first time I heard ‘Hey There Mr.’ my eyes welled up with tears at the first cry of ‘I’m on my way.’ The way the song swells and spirals upward, drums marching…I found myself covered in goosebumps. Leisure Alaska are simply exceptional. I suggest that you start paying attention now.
