Hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, Leisure Alaska, I suspect, will be making great big tidal waves of joyful noise in the United States very soon.
Bjarke Søballe, Jakob Rasmussen and Andreas Joachim Fog-Petersen’s music has captivated me since I first heard them on garageband.com. In a blind music review process, I was served ‘Transistors in My Mind’ and was instantly smitten with their sound. Rarely do I hear something once and think to myself, ‘I must know who this is and I must have this album.’ I was heartbroken to find that the CD wasn’t available in the US.
After a few e-mails to the band and much whining and stomping, I finally received notice from Bjarke that they had placed the CD for sale at CD Baby. I ordered three and to my delight, each song on Leisure Alaska’s self-produced The Deja in My Vu, was just as infectious as ‘Transistors in My Mind,’ if not more so.
On an initial listen, you get sucked in to the sticky guitar hooks and melodies. The second round you find that not only is the musicianship extraordinary, the songwriting is thoughtful in its simplicity and extraordinary in its execution. By the third listen, you realize that The Deja in My Vu listens like potato chips eat, addictive and always leaving you wanting more.
Sidebar: The first time I heard ‘Hey There Mr.’ my eyes welled up with tears at the first cry of ‘I’m on my way.’ The way the song swells and spirals upward, drums marching…I found myself covered in goosebumps.
Leisure Alaska are simply exceptional. I suggest that you start paying attention now.
