Album Notes

Fray (free) is Lenka’s fourth and to date, most adventurous solo CD project. Seeking a very specific, global sound to reflect her personal beliefs, she has enlisted the talents of a unique assemblage of musicians rooted in diverse musical traditions. From classical Indian, Egyptian, and Eastern European music to North and South American styles, Fray is an adventurous melding of modern Yiddish poetry with global musical influences. Blurring boundaries between styles and traditions, the album claims a new space in contemporary world music as a unique, Yiddish-based genre. The "Fray" band features some of Toronto’s leading world and jazz musicians, including Ravi Naimpally (tabla, dumbek), Alan Hetherington (drums, percussion), George Koller/Chris Gartner (bass), Ernie Tollar (flutes, saxophones), John Gzowski (guitars, oud), and Maryem Hassan Tollar/George Sawa (qanun). After its release at the Ashkenaz Festival in Toronto, Canada, Fray had its South American debut in Buenos Aires, Argentina (October, 2010), and in Europe in Poland (September, 2011).
