A surprisingly softspoken collaboration between Dutch folk-singer Leoni Jansen and the Senegalese trio les Freres Guissé. Folk-traditionals such as "Slaves lament" and Redwinged Blackbird" as well as original songs are performed in an African/Celtic/Folk blend, seamlessly united by Dutch top-producer Onno Krijn.

The cd entitled "Nina" by Leon Jansen and Les frères Guissé is a wistfully beautiful musical work of art that touches the imagination and spawns a mood of inner reflection with its impressive mix of Afro-Celtic and folk influences. The general musical composition, mixing and quality of recording are products of hard work which meet a laudable level of excellence. Its lyrical definition and the vocal blend and pitch give this cd a unique cultural identity. Every musical instrument and the manner of play perfectly agree with its powerful and insightful lyrics. The artists are quite in touch with the historical and musical contexts of the Land. "Slave Lament" is a moving number, skillfully composed, that pensively catches auditory attention. "Fouta" has a South America flavor with impressive piano and percussion work. "Nina" has a wonderful play of guitar and a fantastic display of acoustic percussion peculiar to that part of Africa. Its thoughtful lyrics articulated via a gorgeously warm speaking voice, with the backing vocals, together give this title a powerful resonating character. If you enjoy refined new world melodies with Afro-Celtic and folk influences that touch the imagination, you will enjoy this CD. Pick up a copy today.
