BIOGRAPHY

SHAPING THE FUTURE
"In making this music my own," notes Terry, "it provides a link in my own experience to transform and move past barriers. Similarly, I feel a calling to bring the Negro Spiritual to the forefront. When I travelled the South, I saw the pain of these songs still alive and I felt a sense of urgency to tell these haunting stories on my violin, it is my desire to continue the work of my ancestors from a new perspective, expressed through contemporary application." These influences together with Lesa's musical abilities produce a unique voice in the field: a voice certain to shape the future of Jazz, Blues, and the Negro Spiritual.

MEDIA QUOTES

"...An easeful but authoritive violinist. Her strong lyrical jazz style made me want to hear more of her..." NAT HENTOFF

"...Terry's bluesy "Sugar Shuffle" is a virtuosic showcase for the composer/soloist, who improvises with the intuition of a Marsalis (any of them)..." SAN ANTONIO LIGHT

"...Lesa's solos burned (urgent beauty)..." JAZZ TIMES

"...Terry in particular came across as a mistress of tonal imagery...her violin could have been a saxophone, while using almost no vibrato, she drew the most subtle nuances out of it in "Midnight Child"....." SAN ANTONIO LIGHT

"...Terry is most "vocal". All her solos could have been sung. What she does with "Moose the Mooch" by Charlie
Parker is a fine a be-bop solo as this listener has ever heard...." MUSIC IN JERSEY/NEW JERSEY EXAMINER

"...Terry's "Midnight Child" is based on "Motherless Child" but, for all practical purposes, is a new and exquisite work. Her solo violin playing was magnificently expressive; her sumptous tone and perfect pitch were enriched by the flattened inflections of the blues...."
EXPRESS NEWS (San Antonio Times)

"...captivating to hear and a visual delight...."
THE FLINT JOURNAL

Soul Stirring!
author: Deborah Denice.
Beautifully stirring. Lesa Terry makes the violin "saaaang", cry, jump & shout and get the Holy Spirit!!! She makes the violin "cry" in the highest octave on the intro and outro of Motherless Child. I got a new perspective on the song while listening to her rendition of the song. I felt and visualized the disconnect from Mother Africa instead of a child separated from his/her maternal guardian. Music that makes you have a intellectually and emotionally profound moment is rare indeed!!!!! I have fallen in love with the track A City Called Heaven. I could never imagine the djembe and violin sounding so sweet together!! The blend of the African drum and European violin is magnificent!!! Lesa Terry goes to "church" on Abundantly. The gospel style piano playing makes you want to shout!!! She truly got the "spirit" on this track. Terry doesn't play notes. She translates a reverential experience!!!!

A remarkable, must have CD!!!!!
author: Debra
Wow, what an awesome CD!!! Where do I begin? First the song selection and arrangements are OUTSTANDING. Ms. Terry’s interpretation of well-know Spirituals is exceptional. Her bold, inspired delivery of songs that many of us have heard for years, most often in their traditional mode, shows her self-assuredness and confidence in her GIFT!!! Secondly, her choice of supporting artist is tops. There is the brilliantly talented and legendary Gerald Wiggins, with his sideman Paul Humphrey in tow, as well as the always magnificent Munyungo Jackson. Add to that Patrice Rushen, Nichelle Holliday and Sweet Honey and the Rock’s extraordinary vocalist Ysaye Barnwell and one can only be in for a mind-blowing musical experience. But no….Ms. Terry has to ensure that she throws in one last surprise or should I say unexpected delight. She includes a tune with her lovely and equally talented sister, Zela Terry and then engages in a bouncy, playful tune called Struttin’ by the Riverside which cleverly incorporates “Down by the Riverside” teased along by her Uncle the legendary Clark Terry on Flugel horn. In my opinion, there aren’t many vocalists who could hold a candle to Ms. Terry’s song interpretations and I think that is what makes her so very special. If you want Spirituals with a twist, this is the CD for you. Absolutely remarkable.!!!! This CD will bring tears to your eyes, take you to CHURCH, and have you tapping your feet. Her rendition of Soon I Will Be Done simply made me weep. I thought that no one but Mahalia Jackson could work this song, boy was I wrong. Overall, her playing will just simply have you in awe and feeling blessed that you are one of the ones in the know………. Ms. Lesa Terry, girl you are truly blessed with a gift. I thank you for sharing it with the world.

I totally love this album. I would recommend anyone to buy it. It is worth it. A great blues style with a rich spirituality. Lisa Terry has a silky style that is emotional and so down to earth. I have bought many to give away to friends. Anyone intersted in jazz violin should have a copy in their collection.
