“Complacency makes casualties,” says Cory Johnson, lead guitarist for The Lid. “It’s become a sort of motto in the band.” Throughout the hysteria of their first year together, The Lid have managed to stay true to their credo. Striving for unique and interesting sounds with every song, the term “genre” hasn’t quite settled on them yet. “We try to keep things fresh. The last thing we need is for songwriting to become comfortable,” comments frontman Eric Pasi. “Abstaining from the recycle-method is something that’s very important to us; we don’t want a formula.” Their style - what the band calls ADDrock - is a conglomeration of traditional, progressive and alternative rock and roll vibes designed to keep the listener engaged while continually pushing the envelope of composition; it is this inattention to focus that partially defines the band.
Recorded and produced by Ev Olcott (12Rods/Halloween Alaska) at Integral Studios, The Lid’s debut full-length album (Like Walking Through Walls) is a personal journey about weathering lifes obstacles and social norms. Pasi, a Carlson School of Management senior at the University of Minnesota and Evans Scholar, reflects on academic versus personal success, his own ‘man-versus-self’ battle with ADHD, the harrowing ethics of corrupt business, and the price of expectations.
The Lid is currently working on putting together a cross-country summer tour and plans to continue their quest for musical innovation if for no other reason than to stave off their own boredom.
