LINDA METZ
Flutist, singer, songwriter, arranger, performing a blend of classical, folk, improvisational and ethnic styles using silver flute, American Indian flutes, penny whistle, baritone ukulele, whistling and vocals.
FOUNDATIONS
When I was 5 my father taught me how to whistle. My music career blossomed from there with 'pretend conducting' classical selections in front of the family stereo, then with piano lessons from my mother, and finally taking up the flute at the ripe old age of 10. My flute playing won me a few awards in high school and college, not because of any dazzling technique, but because I worked hard and felt the music deeply. After completing a Bachelor of Music Education degree and a Master of Flute Performance degree, God broke in upon my life and replaced a performance focus with a ministry focus. When I was 37 I returned to school and earned a Master of Divinity degree with an emphasis in world missions. A graduate internship in West Africa fueled my love for ethnic music, an influence which is found sprinkled lightly throughout some of my arrangements. To date my missions work includes trips to Romania, Ghana, Dominican Republic and Kazakhstan.
REFLECTIONS
As a childhood cancer survivor and perennial student at Hard Knock U., I credit life's immense challenges as being the building blocks for my relationship with God as well as the fabric of my music. If there's anything good, unique or honest in the music I write and play, it is only because of the relentless outpouring of mercy upon my life.
FAMILY
My mother was my first and best music teacher and accompanist. I live with her now and find the roles reversed as I have become her care-giver. In spite of that she is still, and always will be, my mother, as well as wonderful musician and published author. I also enjoy close ties with my highly energetic sister who believes that the book we're co-writing about our collective 10 cats is going to catapult us to fame. We continue to sorely miss my father who died in 1995. We cherish every memory of our favorite man. Daddy was a soil scientist/researcher for the U.S. Forest Service.
FRIENDS
There's one thing I can boast about in life and that is my wonderful friends. I'd like to mention just 2 of them. Jesus has been my friend since 1974. Forgive the cliché but he is out of this world and more than that, he's better than this world. He is devoted, loyal, strong, faithful, merciful, and I'm completely dependent on him. The other friend I'll mention is right next to him. Alisa Bair has been my comrade in music, prayer, and life's journey since 1973. She was the first person to be the hands, feet and heart of Jesus to me and therein has been her ongoing profound influence upon my life. One of her compositions is heard on my "Refreshing" CD.
WORK
My full-time work includes directing the music ministry at Fellowship Of Christ EPC in Cary NC, freelancing with my music, taking care of mother, and performing with Bill Leslie's Celtic group "Lorica".
PLAY
I'm an avid hiker and lover of animals, woods, and nature in general. Back at home I'm surrounded by my 5 cats who provide me with endless entertainment.
