Album Notes

This is a coterie of songs with specific meaning. A cd that is thematic in content. Lin, was a former InnerCity recording Artist that performed with an advant garde group called Solar Plexus. Her expertise was the use of electronics with the voice to enhance her soloing skills and musicianship. While in this group. she was expected to solo like a horn, as there were no lyrics and the compositions were all original and in odd and mixed meter. In this her latest effort, Lin turns to wonderful standards not usually heard and sings them in her own original and commanding style. There are bebop influences ala Charlie Parker, as well as Brazilian genre. She handles her ballads with sultry aplomb and originality. The arrangements are catered to her soft whispy, yet warm seductive sound. She employs the use of electronics to create texture in her voice. She possesses excellant scatting abilities present in her ballads as well as her uptempo selections. There is a Duke Ellington tribute dedicated to Lin's father and a wonderfus new version of Russ Freeman's tune, "The Wind", which Lin does, but with a musical twist. She sings it in a 5/4 meter with a bossa feel for style.
Lin is no novice when it comes to the recording studio environment. She recorded four other LPs with Solar Plexus and produced two additional sessions on her own. Lin was also active in the voice-over world. She has done commercials, and jingles in the world of TV and Radio.

Lin McPhillips is a contemporary vocal goddess ! She takes an incredibly creative approach to soloing, and can go from single lines to the sound of a full vocal ensemble within one phrase or chorus. Ms McPhillips is backed by super talented players who admirably accompany as they spin hip and complex grooves behind Lin's vocal pyrotechnics. This album is highly recommended !

Had the pleasure of listening to Lin's latest effort "My Shining hour" and I must say this is one of the nicest albums I have had the pleasure of listening to in a long time. There is superb musicianship and great arrangements, and Lin stands out with her fine voice. I thought I would find a favourite track on the album to every track stands out..And with such a great selection of tunes it is difficult.. From the Bebop classic Au Privave by Bird, to the Jobum Classic So Danco Samba, to some great Ellington tunes and more, Lin has recorded a superb, well thought out album that left me tapping my feet and feeling good. As a professional musician, sometimes I find it difficult to find an album that really resonates with me but this album by Lin is a definite must have for any music lover. It was also featured as album of the week on Jazz FM 94.7 in South Africa. A BIG THUMBS UP!!!
